Even with updated Norton, I just found a virus
After reading the warnings in the rewards forum about people finding viruses with virus checkers that were free/different than Norton/Mcfee, I found one one my machine. It was Housecall that caught it. TY for saving my computer before more damage got done. It looks like I caught it from a fairly large PTR's sponsor, with its pop up. It explains why the PC was dragging lately. Also removed a lot of forceably installed spyware. Yes, I do keep Norton updated daily. Doesn't seem to be enough anymore. We used to advise to use an updated virus checker. Now we have to advise to use several of them. Ugh. No wonder we feel stressed, on top of life's normal stuff. It would have been much worse, though, w/o all of OPS wise advise. Don't worry, I contributed with mine.
Just mad we all have to go through this. What a pain. TY for listening.

Can you tell me where you got housecall? Is it free?

The one I used is the free trial version. See http://bigbigforums.com/showthread.php3?t=395902
or
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
The first URL sobered me up into going to their URL. PC worked much better afterwards.

Re: Even with updated Norton, I just found a virus
Even Norton can't keep up with all of the virus's out there. I am behind a firewall, protected by just about everything and I know that there has to be a virus out there that will get through. The only thing that you can do is keep fighting back with virus scans that you can find or buy. Kill one today and tomorrow there will be a new one to take it's place.
I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints.

Re: Even with updated Norton, I just found a virus
I bought Kaspersky's. Its the best I have ever used. It does the job well, simply and in the background. It updates and runs every night, and caught everything Norton didn't. I'll never use Norton again, and neither will any of the people I have recommended it to.
Anyway... after you run all your diagnostics, go to www.pcpitstop.com and run that. Its free and will tell you where you're lacking in security, etc., and recommend steps to fix it.

Re: Even with updated Norton, I just found a virus
Here's the thing, though 1) I have a firewall, too. 2) I use two different virus checkers, and keep them up to date via paid subs 3) I use the free ones, too
4) In addition to above, I use Spysweeper, Adaware, Panda, and several other products out there. And yet I was STILL infected. Sometimes it would be nice to just enjoy the Internet w/o all that. I guess you never know. It is like going outside in the world. You can wear sunscreen, be careful, and still be hurt occasionally. Maybe its better to just live life and enjoy it, and not sweat the small stuff if you are reasonably careful. You are right, there are no guarantees in life. You can reduce your risk of stuff happening, though. Lllbriteyes, TY. I will look into that. I may be buying it very soon. Sure cheaper than another computer is.
