Unhappy Upset with temp companies (can't find me a job)

I was on the phone with 5 of my temp companies, complaining that they are not looking hard enough for me a job. I use to work for UPMC Health until I got layoff the week before thanksgiving back in 2002. I have had on and off temp jobs but no one is hiring or looking for temps at this time. I live in Pittsburgh, PA and yes I went to job fairs and yes answer ads in the newspaper, (which by the way you can only fax or e-mail your resume to them). I am unable to call and check on resumes that I have fax or mail to companies, because they don't want people to call in. Well how in the world can a person check to see if you recieve the resume. Which by the way is stupid. How in the world can a person find a job if human resource will not reply back to the person (or at least telling you that recieve your resume). For a person like myself that very unperfessional. I'm looking for some thing in the human resources , recpetionist, secertary,or clerical department. I did customer service for 3 years. People don't understand that I must do something difference. I must teacher and learn myself something new. Their is more then just customer service out there to do. I wouldn't even mine doing temp service work(you know helping others find jobs like myself). I went to Sperhion, Manpower, AMerican Business Center, and another temp agency that I can't remember. That's how upset I am right now. I just turn 32 today. Today is my birthday. I would love a job. I would love to work for a company that is stable, nice to there worker, etc... But here in Pittsburgh, PA the economice is really, really bad. All the jobs are outside the city and you need a car, in which I don't have one because I can't keep a job. I been layoff twice with in 4 years. Every job I was in lay me off with in a 2 year spam. I'm starting to eat more and not excerise, getting depression and can't sleep right any more. Is it just me or am I become a loser. Do anyone have any suggestion? I just want to cry.

Sorry to hear about your situation. It's tough everywhere these days.
Maybe you could update your resume or perhaps send a followup letter a week or so after the resume. Keep putting yourself out there and
use all your avenues to find something-family, friends, past employers or coworkers, church, community groups. You get the idea. It's hard but eventually you will find a position that you'll love.
    Good luck.

Not to flame you, but I hope your resume is more professional than this post. I realize you are upset and I too have trouble typing when I'm in that mood, but please check your resume to make sure there are no spelling and grammar errors in it. Those can take you out of the running for a job faster than anything.

Good Luck to you, I hope you find a fullfilling job soon!

There is a place on line called 10minuteresume.com that you can do a resume for free, and have it opened to the companies in the area of your choice. It might help you to do the resume, which they have a tutorial to help, and you can send them for free.
I know the area you are in very well, being born and raised there, and know, depending on the section of town you are in that things are really tight. Perhaps try and look into the civil service testing, and see if you may qualify for some sort of work with the public agencies. Good luck, and stick with it.

*Edited to add that this resume site also offers emailing, faxing AND tracking of your resume.

I know what you mean about the fax or email resume. With some email programs you can make it where you get a msg back saying that they read the email. I know you can with outlook. Some of the best programs to know for any job is windows, microsoft office (excel, word, etc). It took me since Jan to find a job. I invested in a fax machine because our scanner has not been doing a good job. A $50 investmeant that netted me at least 4 interviews. Word your resume so that they see that you have been laid off, not that you have quit a job. But word it so that it does not seem like you are blaming them.
    Good Luck

Well... I'm really not one that should be saying much on this topic, being as I'm basically unemployed myself at the moment. But this is what I know... You have to have faith that you are going to get the job. So what if the only job left in PA is Janitor (just a random example), you have to be or fake how happy you are about the job. Currently, I am doing P/T work for a tax company, and while I really don't like anyone that works there (due to personal issues outside of work, I knew these 2 girls before I started and hadn't seen them in a couple years so had no idea they were there) but as a former manager told me, I "fake the funk". I talked w/ the owner today, as she knew I was not happy about my lack of hours. Trust me, if it wasn't so close to the house I wouldn't even go back. But she knows that I am dedicated to do ANYTHING, even cleaning the bathroom, so she told me that she wants me to come back all next week and do some work for her on the phones.
Also, this is probably just my southern upbringing but EVERYONE higher up than me in any aspect is "Sir" or "Ma'am". Especially with managers/owners I never say Mr. or Mrs. so and so, it's always "Yes, Sir/Ma'am" or if they say my name, it's never just "Yes?" it's ALWAYS "Sir?/Ma'am?" Maybe try addressing people that way, not saying you don't but...
As for temp agencies: DO NOT EVER GO TO: @Work, Snelling and Snelling or Kelly's. They will screw you out of jobs. I've been there, done that. I HIGHLY recommend Randstad, ESPECIALLY if you are not opposed to Factory Work.
Also, how are you dressing when you go in to pick up applications? So many of us forget that looks unfortunately do matter in the business world and that you probably should dress up or go business casual EVEN if you are just applying at McDonald's. That's what I do anyway, because you NEVER know who's watching you.

This probably didn't help, but this is just my experience.

I've been outta work for 2yrs now this month. It is like that all over. Not just in your area. Maybe u need to open yourself up to more positions within the temp agencies. Maybe other places besides medical companies. Like in my case, I'm a medical biller. Now if I wanted a job badly enuf, I'd let the temp agencies know I was also interested in data entry, any clerical or receptionist, etc. Not just as a medical biller. But I'm not in dire need for a job. Also, broaden your range that you will travel. If the temp agency has in their files that u will only work in your city, that's all they'll offer u in jobs. If you are willing to travel to the next city or over more, chances are there is more of a selection to be offered to u. I wouldn't get uppity w/the temp agency ppl, maybe u just need to widen your choices in positions u would be willing to accept. Nowadays, ppl aren't in the position to pick and choose. With the economy the way it is and the jobs going elsewhere . . . . it's hard. Good luck.

I would say that's the problem right there. Temp agencies will not send you out if you have an attitude with them. I have worked for several temp services and it takes time for them to build up trust in you and send you to the "good" jobs. By the time I left, I know the girls in the office's husbands and kids names. I talked to them at least a couple times a week.

Cowgirlie, I have had a really good experience with Kelly.

Doreas_13, try putting your resume on monster.com. I got offers right and left within a few days of psoting mine.

And ITA with wyozozo, you need to double check your resume for spelling and grammatical errors. If the HR person sees typos or misspelled words, it's going right in the trash. Yahoo has a super easy resume maker and it's free. Just go to Yahoo and type in resume.

Go with what you know! If you have 3 yrs in Cust Svc, use it! Don't try to get into other areas right off the bat. If you can find a good Cust Svc posistion, take it. You can always apply for HR and reception jobs as they are posted within your company.

    Good luck and Happy Birthday!

I just reread the original post. I think if you are desperate for a job, u need to stay w/something u have experience in. Temp agencies will not send u to a job (especially in HR Dept) if you have never had experience in it. That's how temp agencies make their money. If employers get word that a temp agency is sending inexperienced ppl, they will take their business elsewhere. And, they DO NOT have to find u a job. So get out of that thinking that they do. U aren't paying for em to find u a job. And if u are coming across to them w/a "you owe me" attitude, I guarantee your resume is at the bottom of the pile. This is not meant to flame u, but maybe to open your eyes a little. Good Luck and Happy Birthday.

The number 1 problem right now seems to be what they call """OUTSOURCING""".
The large company's, Dell, Hewlett Packard, AOL, G.E, General Mtrs, etc. and even hospitals are sending millions of jobs overseas. I think you will be seeing a lot more of this in the weeks ahead because more and more we are losing positions to India and other countries. And it all has to do with m-o-n-e-y... A very good friend of mine lost his 2,000.00 a month job to someone in India that will get 300.00 a month. See what I mean? Everytime I have to call somewhere lately the calls put through to a person in India who you can't even understand! Sorry if I have gone on and on but I am so very upset with whats happening to our countrys jobs. MAKES ME SICK!!
You can check out this website. It is only one of many..
