Thread: I need to plan the MOTHER of all garage sales!

Ok, Spring is coming and I have a major overload of stuff occupying<sp?> half of my basement! I can't live like this anymore! Grant it, me and the DH and kiddos had our own stuff to get rid of BUT my Mom who has moved in with us brought with all of the contents of her two story home! YES...we have donated TONS already to GoodWill. I've sold on Ebay and listed here at BBS with no luck. I can't come up with tables anywhere - no church or club will loan them to us without being members. Renting them is nuts, the lowest is $17 a table for 24 hrs. I do have a huge backyard! Any suggestions?

sure start labeling n pricing items now.. use drop clothes or old sheets etc.. lay em out neatly n do it from there... your like me i have over 7 yrs of new.mint condition stuff from my dd in my basement n wanna do the same lol good luck peg

Can you get your hands on some saw horses and some boards??? Those would do the trick .

Haul your dining room table outside, it may be heavy but it will give you some space. Also, take the 4 chairs and put them in a square and put a big sheet of plywood over them and use that for another table. Hang clothes on hangers and hang them from a fence or tie rope to both ends of a shower curtain rod and hang that from somewhere to hang clothes on. If you have a garage you can hang it from the garage door track. Hmmmm......the sheets on the ground might work but I personally will not stoop over for very long looking thru stuff and some people are not physically able to do that. Use any kind of coffee tables, end tables, shelves, etc you might have to put stuff on. Just look around your house for ideas, Im sure you have stuff if you get creative. Have fun and make lots of money!

You can take a couple of chairs and take a spare closet door and lay across them or take boxes and flip them upside down and lay the stuff on top of them. Or take a lounge style lawn chair and lay it out flat and use it too. Hope you make some money with your stuff, I always end up giving everything away and never take the time to do a yard sale.

See if any of your neighbors have tables or things like that in their garage that they would be willing to let you borrow.

If you have folding ladders...you can put a broom handle between them and hang clothes on them.

Bring tables from inside the house...just put a sign saying tables not for sale.

And the real trick is to price it so low that you don't end up taking anything back into the house. Make signs with big fat letters so that people know where the sale is going to be. Lots of arrows with signs that say "CHEAP" or "MY LOSS, YOUR GAIN". Anything that will attract attention.

You can even turn cardboard boxes upside down and place stuff on them.

I would have to agree with everyone about tables. I know I hate to rummage through stuff on the ground or in boxes. If you can price everything, people seem to hate to ask what something costs. Its a lot of extra work but worth it in the end.

It took me a good week or so to organize my last garage sale, but I made over $500 and it rained the whole weekend! Clothes and furniture seemed to sell the best. I tried to organize the clothes by sizes etc.

Try and make sure items are dusted off and look neat. I think the neater the sale area the better you do.

Have a freebie box. Everyone loves something for nothing!

Put up alot of signs and place them at all the major entrance points to your housing area. I know my petpeeve in seeing the sign at the main intersection and then never seeing another one. If you can afford to advertise in your local paper. Diehard gargage/yard salers scope these out before the day of the sale.
