Eat At Your Own Risk: EPCOT Center
A CBS 2 Special Report
Feb 10, 2004 11:09 pm US/Eastern
NEW YORK (CBS) If you caught EPCOT's magnificent fireworks show last July after diving into the all-you-can-eat feast at the Biergarten Restaurant you may have found more explosions going off in your stomach than in the sky. CBS 2's Kirstin Cole reports.
The German Pavilion racked up three critical health code violations, melon salad, sausage salad, macaroni salad and pork were all held at dangerous temperature. State inspectors ordered some of it thrown out on the spot!
"They take a lot of precautions in other areas so I'm kind of shocked at that," says Brenda Beard.
Families like Brenda Beard's come to Walt Disney World on vacation with great expectations. From the rides and attractions to the restaurants and grounds Disney invites you to believe in magic.
But a CBS 2 Eat At Your Own Risk investigation found the unbelievable. Half of the 150 Walt Disney resort eateries we obtained health inspection records for had at least one critical health code violation in 2003!
Violations Florida health officials in Tallahassee say can make you and your family sick.
"Certainly our big attractions in Florida have a stake in food safety, they've got a brand and image to protect," says Geoff Luebkemann from the Department of Business & Professional Regulation.
But last year 17 people claimed they got food poisoning at Walt Disney World and went straight to the state of Florida to report it. Still, other guests chose to complain directly to Disney when they saw not Mickey Mouse, but a real live rodent.
Carole Hayne, from England, her best friend and their children dined at the Mexican hot spot San Angel Inn on the final night of their vacation last October. "We had a really, really good holiday so it was our last
celebration."
But the families' celebration at the Base of the Volcano quickly erupted into mayhem when Carole says one of the kids spotted not Mickey Mouse, but a rat snacking on scraps in the dining room.
"The children were quite horrified as we all were they jumped up and wanted to leave," says Hayne.
Which is exactly what they did.
Hayne says not only did she complain to Disney, she took her grievance to Florida's Department of Business and Professional regulation. They investigated, and while the state found no sign of rats at the restaurant they did uncover two critical health code violations
"It's the last place I would expect to find a rat in a restaurant," adds Hayne.
"We think we work very hard to make this a great, safe place to visit," says Disney spokesperson Jacquee Polak.
Polak insists Disney is a leader in food management and safety, that their workers are trained above the state standards and points to the fact that of the millions and millions of guests they served last year only a few had problems, but she also admits there is room to improve.
"Certainly that is not acceptable and that is not the standard, we have a pest management system here in place," says Polak.
Exploring the culture and cuisine of Morocco, restaurant Marrakesh will lure you in to this sultan's palace. But far from guests getting the royal treatment state inspectors last September uncovered four critical health code violations.
After inspectors found chicken pastilla, egg rolls, and mayonnaise all held at dangerously high temperatures, they ordered it thrown away on the spot.
One of the things we find again and again are foods held in dangerous temperature zones?
"When there is a violation at one location it is corrected immediately, the cast is again trained to make sure that doesn't happen again," says Polak.
Continuing our tour around the world in EPCOT, inspectors came to a halt at France, not to savor the French cuisine, but to slap the restaurant, Bistro de Paris, with two critical health code violations.
Chicken stock was held at dangerous temperatures and ordered to be tossed out while raw chicken was stored above raw lamb and what's worse, raw fish was stored above bread and cooked clams! All creating the potential for dangerous cross contamination.
Trying to avoid the spread of harmful bacteria, Disney says they've now pioneered a new device to conduct their own inspections and try to keep food within safe temperature ranges.
"The USDA the FDA and other local health officials have used us for their training ground, we think that the system we have in place is effective, when there is an error we make the correction," says Polak.
If you're going to Disney and you experience any problems, you can report them to Disney and Florida state health officials.
And keep in mind, half of the Disney restaurants had no violations in 2003.

Geez, and to think that food probably wasn't cheap either. Having just gotten food poisoning the other night, thank God there are inspectors who go into these places to see if there are any violations.

Hmmm, that's odd. When I worked there, they were totally stickler about maintaining temperatures and stuff. But I also notice my location did not make the list at the bottom either. But then again, World Premiere Food Court may not have been inspected. We were supposed to be when I was down there and it never happened. As of when I left, it had never been inspected by State Officials that I know of.
