    Sexual Purity Fact Sheet (Homosexuality)--2002

Facts and statistics related to homosexuality and sexual purity

    Scriptures

Genesis 2:20-24 -- So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found. So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh. Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman, ‘ for she was taken out of man. For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.

Genesis 19:1-7 -- The two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city. When he saw them, he got up to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground. “My lords,” he said, “please turn aside to your servant’s house. You can wash your feet and spend the night and then go on your way early in the morning.” “No,” they answered, “we will spend the night in the square.” But he insisted so strongly that they did go with him and entered his house. He prepared a meal for them, baking bread without yeast, and they ate. Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom--both young and old--surrounded the house. They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.” Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind him and said, “No, my friends. Don’t do this wicked thing.”

Leviticus 18:22 -- Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable.

Leviticus 20:13a -- If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable.

Romans 1:26-27 -- Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 -- Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

1 Timothy 1:8-11 -- We know that the law is good if one uses it properly. We also know that law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious; for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, for adulterers and perverts, for slave traders and liars and perjurers--and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine that conforms to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.

    Moral Ambiguity

According to the Barna Research Group survey in 2001, adults were asked several questions concerning homosexuality.

Forty-eight percent said homosexual relationships between consenting adults should be legal. Forty-two percent said they should not be legal and 10 percent said they had no opinion.

Forty-five percent of adults said that homosexuality should be considered an acceptable lifestyle alternative. Forty-six percent said they should not and nine percent were not sure.

Forty-nine percent of adults believe homosexuality is due to non-genetic factors including environment and upbringing. Thirty-three percent believe people are born gay. Seventeen percent were not sure.

Sixty-two percent of adults believe clergy should not marry gay couples or bless the union. Thirty percent say they should. Eight percent had no opinion.

    Homosexuality & the Boy Scouts

In December 2001, the San Diego City Council approved an extension of the lease of Balboa Park for the Boy Scouts of America. The extension is for 25 years with an option for another 15 years. The Boy Scouts will pay $1 per year for the use of the park. The council meeting considered the issue for more than seven hours before finally approving the measure by a 6-3 margin.

At issue, of course, is the stance of the Boy Scouts on homosexuality. One councilwoman who is gay admitted that the Scouts have helped many but have left others behind-something that she said was “not OK with me today.” The city’s mayor, Dick Murphy, said that the Scouts teach “character, community service, love of the outdoors and other ‘things that are very valuable.’” But he added, “I do not agree with the national Boy Scout policy regarding gays. The bottom line is this: I support the Boy Scout lease because I am unwilling to punish 25,000 San Diego Boy Scouts by prohibiting them from using Balboa Park in order to send a protest to national scout leaders in Texas.”
“City Council Renews Boy Scout Lease,” www.thesandiegochannel.com <http://www.thesandiegochannel.com>, December 5, 2001

A poll conducted by the Gallup Organization in June 2000 asked the question: “Do you think the Boy Scouts of America should or should not be required to allow openly gay adults to serve as Boy Scout leaders?” Of those questioned, 31 percent said they should be, 64 percent said they should not be, and five percent had no opinion.
“Americans React to Supreme Court Decisions,” www.gallup.com <http://www.gallup.com>, June 28, 2000

Leon J. Podles, in an article in Touchstone, says that predatory pedophiles have continually been a problem in the Boy Scouts. He also points out that there is a distinction between homosexuality and pedophilia, the problem is primarily one with men who are homosexuals. The presence of homosexuals within Scouting, then, tends to negate the trust building that is necessary for cohesiveness within the group. He adds: “Almost all men and boys see any indication of homosexuality as a threat to masculinity, and masculinity is the center of identity for almost all men. Becoming a man and staying a man is not simply a matter of physical growth: a boy must face physical, mental, and moral challenges before he can become a man, a father, and a community leader. Homosexual activists hate the Scouts because the Scouts are the biggest organization dedicated to turning boys into men, and this organization rejects homosexuality because it is incompatible with masculinity. Almost all men, including homosexuals, react violently to having their masculinity impugned, and the mere existence of the Scouts’ policy impugns the masculinity of homosexuals.”
Cited in “The Public Square,” First Things, Richard John Neuhaus, November, 2001

The Boy Scouts of America has reaffirmed its policy against allowing homosexuals to serve as Scout leaders. The executive board statement said, “An avowed homosexual cannot serve as a role model for the traditional moral values espoused in the Scout Oath and Law and that these values cannot be subject to ‘local option’ choices.” In the same meeting, the executive board also reaffirmed its policy that does not allow atheists to serve as leaders.
“Boy Scouts Reaffirm ‘Traditional Standards’,” www.cnsnews.com <http://www.cnsnews.com>, February 6, 2002

    Homosexuality & the Girl Scouts

While the Boy Scouts of America have taken a definite stand on the issue of homosexuality, the Girl Scouts are trying their own version of “Don’t ask, don’t tell.” The national organization says that each local chapter can decide for themselves what their stance on the issue will be. Some have adopted guidelines that “specifically protect their members against discrimination based on sexual orientation.” Ellen Christie Ach, a spokeswoman for the national organization says, “We rely on adults involved to use their own best judgment.”

    Civil Unions

Vermont’s civil union law became effective July 1, 2000. Not everyone is happy about it. The law was challenged in the courts and finally made its way to the state Supreme Court. The law was challenged on two counts. Challengers said the law was not valid because 14 House members who supported the legislation bet on the outcome of a preliminary House vote. The second challenge came from town clerks who argued that the law forced them to violate their religious beliefs that homosexuality is wrong by issuing licenses to couples for civil unions.

The state Supreme Court rejected both challenges. It said the House must decide for itself whether to disqualify the legislators who placed the one-dollar bets. In regard to the second challenge, the court did not rule directly on the claim. It said the “proposition that a public official…can retain public office while refusing to perform a generally applicable duty of that office on religious grounds” is “highly questionable.” The court did say that the town clerks could appoint assistants to issue the licenses.

Two thousand, five hundred and fifty-four civil unions have been performed in Vermont from July 1, 2000 to August 1, 2001. Of that number, 2,044 of the unions were for out-of-state residents.
“Most Civil Unions Go to Out of State Residents,” www.cnsnews.com <http://www.cnsnews.com>, August 14, 2001

State assemblyman Paul Koretz, the sponsor of a California bill that would have provided for civil unions much like those in Vermont, has pulled the bill from consideration. The bill was pulled just days before it was to be considered by the judiciary committee. In January, Koretz boasted, “We put civil unions on the map in California and began the dialog.” But heated opposition from the Culture and Family Institute, Focus on the Family, the Campaign for California Families, Family Research Council, Concerned Women for America, as well as several other groups led to the postponement. Robert Knight of the Culture and Family Institute believes this is not just a withdrawal but also a defeat. “If they thought they could get it passed, why did they have to switch gears?” Knight asked.

    Diversity Training

The San Francisco Police Department is establishing diversity training so that officers will know how to deal with transgendered people. The training is in response to complaints from those who have undergone gender changes. Theresa Sparks, a male-to-female transsexual who serves on the city’s human rights commission says, “There has been a big problem.” The training will cover issues like officers using the wrong pronoun when they address transgendered people to physical and verbal harassment.

    Health Issues

Based on a telephone survey concerning health risk behaviors by the Centers for Disease Control, the Medical Institute Advisory found the following disturbing figures:

In the previous year, 86.3 percent of respondents reported having at least one sexual partner. Of those responding, 77.1 percent had only one partner, 7.1 percent had two partners and 2.1 percent had more than two.

18 percent reported having at least one new sexual partner in the past 12 months.

26 percent reported using a condom the last time they had sexual intercourse.

2.8 percent had been treated for an STD in the past five years.
The authors of the survey found that, based on the above responses, 4.1 percent of those who responded to the survey were at high risk for HIV infection.
“New Study Examines HIV Risk Behaviors in American Adults,” www.medinstitute.org <http://www.medinstitute.org>, December 12, 2001

“The United States has a large and growing Hispanic population that is heavily affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemics. In 1999, Hispanics represented 13% of the U.S. population (including residents of Puerto Rico), but accounted for 19% of the total number of new U.S. AIDS cases reported that year (9,021 of 46,400 cases). The AIDS incidence rate per 100,000 population (the number of new cases of a disease that occur during a specific time period) among Hispanics in 1999 was 25.6, almost 3 times the rate for whites (7.6) but lower than the rate for African Americans (66.0)… Hispanics in the United States include a diverse mixture of ethnic groups and cultures.”
“HIV/AIDS Among Hispanics in the United States,” www.cdc.gov <http://www.cdc.gov>

    Signs of HIV Infection:

    Unexplained, extreme tiredness.

Unexplained fever, shaking chills or night sweats lasting longer than a few weeks.

Swollen glands (enlarged lymph nodes) at multiple sites, such as in the neck, armpits or groin, which are otherwise unexplained and persistent.

Pink or purple flat or raised blotches, usually about the size of a quarter, occurring on or under the skin, inside the mouth, nose, eyelids, or rectum. At first they may look like bruises, but they are firmer than the surrounding skin, are painless, and do not disappear.

An unexplained and unintended weight loss of more than 10 percent of your total body weight over a period of one or more months.

A persistent thick, whitish coating on the tongue or in the throat.

A dry cough which has lasted too long to be caused by a common respiratory infection, especially if accompanied by a shortness of breath.

Pain in the esophagus (food pipe) when swallowing.

Confusion, personality changes, loss of memory and equilibrium.

Chronic diarrhea that usually lasts a couple of weeks to a month…This leads to the wasting syndrome.

    Homosexuals & Adoption

The American Academy of Pediatrics has endorsed homosexual adoption of children. While the new policy focuses primarily on acquiring “legally protected parental rights for homosexual ‘co-parents’ whose partners have children,” but the policy also could be applied to homosexual couples who want to adopt a child that is not related to either of them. The academy estimates that as many as nine million children in the United States have at least one homosexual parent. Academy members are urged to take an active part in support of homosexual adoptions. Their research, they claim, finds “no existing data to support the widely held belief that there are negative outcomes” for children raised in a homosexual environment. But critics say they relied on data that is flawed and the academy is meddling in a political issue. Rev. Louis Sheldon of the Traditional Values Coalition says, “It’s a group of pro-homosexual people…who want to further tear down the one-man, one-woman relationship in America.” He further called the action “a disservice to medicine.”
“Doctor Group Supports Homosexual Adoption,” www.washtimes.com <http://www.washtimes.com>, February 4, 2002

Shortly after the announcement by the American Academy of Pediatrics supporting homosexual adoptions, the academy drew heavy fire from several Christian organizations. Dr. Richard Land, president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission said, “In the case of children who are being reared with same-sex relationships, they’re exposed to these relationships 24/7. It would seem to me that the only way you could say that being reared with such relationships is okay is if you don’t see anything abnormal or unhealthy about same-sex relationships per se. That is a judgment, or lack of judgment, that the vast majority of Southern Baptists and other evangelical Christians would reject.”

William Maier, a child and family psychologist at Focus on the Family, says, “Studies on the topic are fraught with methodological flaws, motivated by political agendas” and that the AAP “has submitted to the will of homosexual activists within its ranks - at the expense of scientific honesty and the very children it seeks to serve.”

Ken Connor, president of the Family Research Council issued a written statement which reads: “There is an abundance of research demonstrating that children do best when raised by a mother and a father who are committed to one another in marriage. Mothers and fathers alike make significant contributions to the physical, emotional and social development of their children. To support a policy that would intentionally deprive a child of such benefits is unconscionable.”

    Homosexuals & the Media

Whether you are a news addict, history buff, avid gardener, home repair enthusiast, golfer or other niche TV watcher, there is almost sure to be a channel for you. Cable channels that appeal to niche markets are ever expanding. Now there is talk of at least one new channel just for homosexuals. The MTV and Showtime subsidiaries of Viacom are planning a gay-oriented cable network. HBO, USA Networks, and “Rainbow Media”, the programming arm of Cablevision, are also talking about other gay channels. Why such interest in gay TV? Media analyst, Tom Wolzein, says, “It’s an important segment of the audience that has traditionally been underserved.” But L. Brent Bozell III replies, “What nonsense. Far from being ‘underserved,’ gays have been pampered and catered to. Seemingly everywhere you turn you find the gay character, the gay theme, the gay argument inserted, and so often for no other reason than to placate the gay community.”

What might be expected of such a channel? Canada already has such a network called PrideVision TV. Michael Joseph Gross of the online Slate magazine says, “As far as sex goes, PrideVision is fairly soaked in it.” He goes on to say that any U.S. gay network “will have to be fearlessly candid about the centrality of sex in much of gay life for gay viewers to take them seriously.” Bozell adds: “Much regarding the gay cable network(s) hasn’t been determined, but the fact that the concept itself is a news story is another step in homosexuality’s long march through the institutions.”
    “More Gays, More Often?” www.mediaresearch.org <http://www.mediaresearch.org>, January 30, 2002

Despite all the hoopla about the possibility of one or more television channels for homosexuals, the film “A Beautiful Mind” deleted all references to the homosexuality of the character on whom the book and film are based. Gay scenes in the book were “completely scrubbed, dropped, eliminated from the film.” An insider told DRUDGE REPORT “the homosexual stuff found in the book got in the way. Besides, American audiences don’t care to see Russell Crowe getting it on with a man! It would just kill us at the boxoffice.” The gay rights group, GLAAD, responded as expected by saying they find it alarming that the producers would believe same-sex love to be too offensive in a major motion picture.

    Homosexuality & Politics

There is a new push in Miami-Dade County to repeal the community’s gay rights ordinance. A referendum will be held on the issue September 10 of this year. But some leaders in the community have just delivered a conflicting message. The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau has just released a pamphlet that cost $40,000, which invites gay and lesbian travelers to “Come see why Greater Miami is truly the Gay Riviera.” The Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce has developed a new website to help the effort along. And with an estimated $54 billion annually in gay travel up for grabs, the city leaders seem to be pulling out all the stops.

The referendum was placed on the ballot after the Miami-Dade Christian Coalition and Take Back Miami Dade collected enough signatures to request the ballot initiative. Anthony Verdugo, chairman of the Miami-Dade Christian Coalition thinks the brochure may actually help the effort to repeal the gay rights ordinance. “The amendment has created a climate that encourages the promotion of tourism based on sexual behavior. We don’t do it for polygamists and bigamists. We don’t do it for people who cheat on their spouses. Why should we do it for gays and lesbians?”

Nearby Key West and Fort Lauderdale have been marketing to the gay segment of the population for years.

In March 2000, California voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition 22 that states, “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.” But one bill already passed and signed by the governor and one still under consideration seem to be attempts to change all that. Governor Gray Davis has already signed into law a bill, AB 25, which grants a dozen rights traditionally associated with marriage to homosexuals. These include: “expand[ed] sick leave, health coverage, tax benefits, and disability pay for domestic partners of employees receiving coverage.” Randy Thomasson, executive director of Campaign for California Families accused the governor of “coming out of the closet with his ambition to redefine marriage and family.”

The second bill, AB 1338, seeks to establish civil unions for homosexuals based on the Vermont model. Its author recently pulled that bill but it could be re-introduced at a later date.

    Reparative Therapy

In 1973, Dr. Robert Spitzer, a practicing psychiatrist and professor at Columbia University, was instrumental in having homosexuality removed from the medical diagnosis manuals as a mental disorder. Back then he was a hero. But more recently, he is being hailed as anything but a hero. He is now the goat. Why? Because in May 2001 he presented a study at the American Psychiatric Association in which he said that homosexuals who were “highly motivated” could change into heterosexuals. Gay-rights groups blasted the study and the A.P.A. backed away from it.

Spitzer interviewed 143 men and 57 women who had sought help in leaving the homosexual lifestyle. He found that 66 percent of men and 44 percent of women had achieved “good heterosexual functioning.” Spitzer admits that his study was not all-inclusive. But he maintains that surveying people who were working to make the change was the only sensible method. He says, “The question wasn’t, Does everybody change? The question was, Does anyone?” Spitzer’s new work is criticized as being out of step with mainstream thinking because it goes against the idea that homosexuality is caused by everything from brain architecture to environment. Spitzer, while standing by his findings, maintains that “they should never be used to justify coercive or discriminatory treatment of gays.”
“Can Gays Switch Sides?” Time, May 21, 2001

    Schools

High School students who identify themselves as homosexuals can get up to $2,500 tuition money for college. The money comes from LEAGUE, an AT&T foundation established by employees of the company. The acronym stands for Lesbians, Bisexual, Gay & Transgendered United Employees. LEAGUE has handed out several $1,500 scholarships in the last six years. While grades do count in the awarding of scholarships, it is apparent that one’s identity as a homosexual is the prime consideration. For those who are willing to devote themselves to “promoting diversity and understanding in the community,” the scholarship, dedicated to the memory of Matthew Shepherd, jumps to $2,500. The Family Research Council’s Kristin Hansen said, “It’s sad that teenagers are being deceived about sexuality and recruited into a lifestyle that is unhealthy and immoral. It’s definitely evidence that homosexual activists are organized at many facets of society-in the corporate world, in schools and in the media.”
“Homosexuality Is Key to Some College Scholarships,” www.cnsnews.com <http://www.cnsnews.com>, January 21, 2002

The Los Angeles Unified School District has approved instructional materials to be used in “diversity” and “safety” programs with elementary and high school students. Among the materials is a “Models of Pride II” reading list that includes such titles as “Young, Gay & Proud,” “One Teenager In 10: Writings by Gay & Lesbian Youth,” and “Homophobia as Child Abuse.” There are 24 other titles that are more of the same.

Assemblyman Dennis Mountjoy, R-Monrovia says of the materials, “The material is being put forward under the guise of tolerance and diversity, but it’s inappropriate. It’s lewd and lascivious…and is darn embarrassing. Here I sit in my office reading my porn. It made me turn red, and I don’t easily turn red.” He added: “I challenge every parent and school board member to review these books and decide if they are appropriate for our children. If you have trouble finding them, contact the LAUSD. They can give you the names of the ‘adult’ bookstores they recommend.” The school district has been sued by one of its own teachers over the offensiveness of the materials.

There are those who would have us believe that 10 percent of the population is gay. Is that true? “The 10% figure began as a misinterpretation of studies done in the 1940s by sexologist/entomologist (student of insects) Alfred Kinsey and his associates. Scholars like Dr. Judith Reisman and Edward Eichel have challenged Kinsey’s research methodology as flawed (he used an unspecified percentage of college student volunteers and convicts with sex offenses) and his statistics as therefore faulty. A series of recent studies from 1989 through 1993 all show similar figures for the real proportion of exclusively homosexual individuals in America: about 1% to 2%.”

    Miscellaneous

The owner-operator of a controversial gay website has been sentenced to five days in jail and three years’ probation on a kidnapping charge. Bruce Allen Ross kidnapped David Powell, a minister at First Baptist Church in San Diego, California on June 18, 2001. At the time, he operated the usQueers.com website which advocated “a horrible death by any means” for “het (heterosexual) supremacists.” The list of people on the site that were deserving of death, according to Ross, were President Ronald Reagan, Senator Jesse Helms, Senator Strom Thurmond, Pat Robertson, James Dobson, and several others. The website carried a disclaimer saying that it did not sanction acts of violence toward the named individuals. But it did ask those who viewed the site to supply information that would make it easier to find them. Judge Peter Deddeh also ruled that Ross must pay a $200 fine, $200 in restitution, be prohibited from carrying firearms or deadly weapons, and wave his Fourth Amendment right prohibiting unwarranted search and seizure. The judge also told Ross, “Do not set up or maintain any websites.” When Ross objected, stating that he had several websites, Judge Deddeh said, If you get on the Internet and get in a chatroom and say something that could be interpreted as a death threat, you could be liable. You violate probation, you go to jail.”
