    Ben Affleck to play Batman

    ... in next Superman movie
By Melissa Gray, CNN - updated 6:31 PM EDT, Fri August 23, 2013

    (CNN) -- Holy backlash, Batman!

Warner Bros. announced Thursday that Ben Affleck will play Batman in the sequel to the Superman movie "Man of Steel."

Rumors about who'll star as the Caped Crusader in the yet-to-be-named film have been swirling ever since "Man of Steel" director Zack Snyder announced at Comic-Con last month that the two superheroes would appear together in the sequel -- their first pairing on the big screen.

Affleck's name wasn't even on The Hollywood Reporter's list of possible Batmans two weeks ago, when it speculated Ryan Gosling or Josh Brolin were likely candidates.

Needless to say, the Internet went nuts -- and not in a good way.

    Are the worries justified?

Affleck's stint as Daredevil was a major flop. Plus, he's just getting his movie street cred back from that other disaster, "Gigli." But he has numerous awards to his name and received critical raves for his role as Superman star George Reeves in "Hollywoodland."

Affleck will star opposite British actor Henry Cavill, who Warner Bros. said will reprise his role as Clark Kent and Superman.

Snyder's reimagining of Superman in "Man of Steel" broke the record for the biggest June opening when it appeared in theaters this year, taking in $125.1 million in its first weekend.

"It's beyond mythological to have Superman and our new Batman facing off, since they are the greatest superheroes in the world," Snyder said at Comic-Con.

Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane also return for the new film, Warner Bros. said. Christian Bale, who starred as Batman in three film installments of "The Dark Knight," told CNN partner Entertainment Weekly last month that he wouldn't be starring in a fourth. "Dark Knight" director Christopher Nolan also said he wasn't opting for a fourth movie in the franchise, the magazine said.

Nolan will, however, have a hand in the upcoming Superman-Batman film -- he's serving as one of the executive producers, Warner Bros. said.

Warner Bros. and DC Comics, the publisher of "Superman" titles, are both units of Time Warner, CNN's parent company.

People are scared of Ben Affleck as Batman because of Daredevil. I would not worry... unless he starts dating J.Lo again.

Next Die Hard will star Justin beiber as the lead, makes about the same amount of sense.

What did we all do as people to deserve making Ben Affleck the new Batman?
Christian Bale why couldn't you just take the damn 50 million?

Joss Whedon backs Ben Affleck as Batman
"The Avengers" director thinks Ben Affleck well "crush it" as the caped crusader.
Comic book fans are still screaming about the announcement.

Bryan Alexander, USA TODAY 12:19 a.m. EDT August 24, 2013

Ben Affleck just got a very important geek endorsement as Batman -- director Joss Whedon.

The Avengers and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. director entered into the heated Batman discussion on Friday night.

Whedon Tweeted, "Affleck'll crush it. He's got the chops, he's got the chin. -- just needs the material."

"Affleck and (Henry) Cavill toe to toe -- I'm in," Whedon added.

The super-Tweet came in the midst of heavy online criticism about the decision that Affleck would play Batman alongside Cavill in the Batman-Superman movie to be released July 17, 2015.

Warner Bros clearly was not expecting a massive Internet backlash when they made the announcement late Thursday. "Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry's Superman," director Zack Snyder said in a statement Thursday. "He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retains the charms that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can't wait to work with him."

The news has provoked a firestorm and a Twitter hashtag #BetterBatmanThanBenAffleck overwhelmed the Web on Friday.

Petitioners urge movie studio to drop Ben Affleck as Batman
    Aug. 24, 2013, 12:09 PM EST

Comic book fans have launched an online petition in a bid to convince Warner Bros. to drop Ben Affleck as Batman.

It has been announced the "Argo" director and star will be taking over the Caped Crusader role most recently played by Christian Bale in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" trilogy in the new Zack Snyder film, which will unite Superman and Batman.

The director feels sure he has the right man for the job, stating, "He (Affleck) has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne (Batman's alter-ego)."

But the news hasn't been welcomed by comic book fans and many have taken to Twitter.com to express their negative feelings about the idea of Affleck as Batman, even jokingly suggesting Affleck's friend Matt Damon could play Batman's sidekick Robin.

Now, a Change.org petition has surfaced online urging Warner Bros., the studio behind the movie, to "remove Ben Affleck as Batman/Bruce Wayne in the Superman/Batman movie."

The petition has garnered over 30,000 signatures since launched on Thursday.

Somehow, The Hub has acquired the rights to air all 120 episodes of the 1966-68 Batman TV show. Any real Bat-Fan knows that despite the fact that so much terrible stuff has been released on DVD/Blu-Ray (Garbage Pail Kids: The Movie... Really?) the 60's Batman show has never been released due to rights issues between DC, Warner Brothers, and 20th Century Fox.

I am all about the amazing cast of celebrity villain guest stars. Caesar Romero as The Joker... Frank Gorshin as The Riddler. Burgess Meredith as The Penguin. Julie Newmar and Earth Kitt as Catwoman. Vincent price as EggHead. Otto Preminger as Mr. Freeze... the list goes on and on and is amazing! I am currently gathering episodes now, and expected recaps to follow shortly. Tune in to your local cable provider to find The Hub on your network. NYC Time Warner customers can catch The Hub on channel 22. Tune in kids... Same Bat-time, same Bat-channel!!!

Many sports, music, and media personalities, and a number of Hollywood actors, looked forward to and enjoyed their appearances as villains on the Batman show. They were generally allowed to overact and enjoy themselves on a high-rated television series, guaranteeing them considerable exposure (and thus boosting their careers).[citation needed] The most popular villains on the show included Cesar Romero as Joker, Burgess Meredith as Penguin, Frank Gorshin as Riddler, and Julie Newmar as Catwoman. Other famous names from the "rogues gallery" in the comic book series made appearances on the show (notably Mad Hatter), and some were taken from other superhero comics, such as Puzzler and Archer (Superman villains) and The Clock King (a Green Arrow villain, who was again portrayed as a Batman villain in the 1990s animated series).[citation needed]

Many other villains were created especially for the television show, and never appeared in the comic books (e.g., Shame, Lorelei "The Siren" Circe, Chandell/Fingers, the Bookworm, Lord Marmaduke Ffogg, Dr. Cassandra Spellcraft, and Louie the Lilac), while some were hybrids. The comics' Mr. Zero was renamed Mr. Freeze, a name change that was copied in the comics with lasting effect, and the comics' Brainy Barrows was reworked as Egghead. The comics featured Eivol Ekdol and his partner in crime the Great Carnado. The television show used Ekdol, but replaced Carnado with Zelda the Great. A 2009 comic book featured the first appearance of a version of King Tut. [6]
