    Mentalist news...

For years, fans of "The Mentalist" have been begging producers to wrap up and solve the Red John mystery. The good news is Season 6 will give fans what they want. The bad news? The highly anticipated resolution will probably spell the end for agents Grace Van Pelt and Wayne Rigsby.

The actors behind these characters, Amanda Righetti and Owain Yeoman respectively, are poised for a Season 6 exit tied to Red John, TVLine reports. Righetti and Yeoman have played coworkers and occasional lovers Van Pelt and Rigsby for five seasons but after the show reveals Red John's identity, the drama will go in a different direction without them.

Man - I like them !! I love watching an interview with Owain Yeoman - he has such a cool accent in his native "Welsh" ?? but he does "American so well Also watch some of the "Sarah Connor Chronicles" where he plays a bad guy... also very well ... too well.... had a hard time getting used to "Rigsby" again.

However - it is about time they wrap up "Red John" with a bow.

Seven suspects are left, but only one is Red John.

Review the lineup before #TheMentalist season premiere this Sunday!: http://bit.ly/11tFMj3

I think it will be the Sheriff

The Sheriff was in the very first episode ... and there was something hinky about him then. In all of the promotional materials for this season I have seen ... the Sheriff is in the center every time. Just playing a hunch.

Mentalist Boss Bruno Heller Breaks Down the Red John Suspects
    Liz Raftery - Sep 27, 2013 07:39 PM ET

It's the beginning of the end for the Red John story line on CBS' The Mentalist. Creator Bruno Heller has promised that the case which has plagued Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) since Season 1 will be solved this year. And based on the Season 6 premiere, Heller and Co. aren't wasting any time in getting to the conclusion.

The kickoff episode (Sunday, 10/9c, CBS) picks up immediately after the conclusion of Season 5, with Jane and Lisbon (Robin Tunney) in possession of seven names — one of whom will be exposed as Red John midway through the season. By the end of the premiere, one suspect will be out of the running, one will (arguably) have emerged as the frontrunner, and Lisbon and Jane find themselves closer to Red John than they've ever been before. And in this case, that might not be a good thing.

"We've never really started a season with this kind of situation in which our guys are very, very close to the bad guy, but the bad guy knows exactly as much as they do," Heller tells TVGuide.com. "It's an interesting chess position that they're both in as we start. ... In this first episode, Lisbon is dealing with the fact that Jane for the first time doesn't seem to know what to do next. And that scares the hell out of her."

We asked Heller to make a case for each of the seven suspects. "All of those guys have reasons to hide aspects of their personality," he says. "It's just a question of whether they're hiding for ordinary prosaic reasons or for sinister, evil reasons."

Read Heller's assessment of each and then tell us which one you think is Red John:

Brett Stiles (Malcolm McDowell): "He's certainly a frontrunner, partly because it's Malcolm McDowell," Heller quips of the recurring guest star, who plays the leader of the Visualize cult. (Not to mention his history of insanity.) "He has the money, he has the resources, and he certainly has the kind of single-minded temperament and lust for power that you would expect to have from someone like Red John," Heller notes.

Gale Bertram (Michael Gaston): As the CBI director, Bertram is certainly in an ideal position to carry out the Red John killings. "[Being] well-placed inside a law enforcement organization, gives him a lot of power," Heller says. "He has admitted that he is a duplicitous and a manipulative person already. We know he can play two sides of the same issue very well. He's certainly got the intellect for it. Whether he has the depth of evil required of this guy, that remains to be seen." Will Jane and Lisbon be able to keep their suspicions about their boss secret this season?

Bob Kirkland (Kevin Corrigan): The Homeland Security agent is "a dark horse," according to Heller. "If you were a betting man, he'd be an outside shot I think, but a good dark horse. He is probably the most mysterious of the candidates, and that makes him suspicious. His behavior sometimes, even what we've seen of his behavior, is inexplicable and even murderous. So, if he ain't Red John, he's certainly one weird cat."

Ray Haffner (Reed Diamond): Heller characterizes former CBI supervisor and cult member Ray Haffner as "the sort of Richard Gere-as-villain type. Smiling, charming. Maybe seems a little too shallow to be a serial killer, or too light. ... With Haffner, he always seems smiling and cheery but there always seems to be a dark cloud behind that smile. That, more than anything, would be what made me suspicious of him."

Reede Smith (Drew Powell): Reed certainly has a temper, but does that make him a killer? "He doesn't even try to hide his anger. He's clearly a man with issues," Heller admits. "The question is, Red John is obviously a very, very intelligent person. What would be a better place to hide your real sort of psychopathic anger than behind a mask of anger? Probably most people are expecting Red John to be a calm, cool, collected type of person. If you were Red John and you wanted to disguise yourself, then you would certainly disguise yourself as the kind of red-faced, angry kind of guy that he can be."

Thomas McAllister (Xander Berkeley): "Again, he's well-placed as a law enforcement official," Heller says of Sheriff McAllister. "He, like Kirkland, has a lot of mystery in his past that makes it difficult to judge. He's a dark horse candidate. He's not a Top 3. He hasn't displayed any signs of madness or anger or homicidal tendencies. So, there's no handle on which Jane can put his suspicions — which in itself is suspicious."

Brett Partridge (Jack Plotnick): "You've always got to be suspicious of the nerds," Heller cautions. "He's both a slightly embittered soul and a very intelligent person. Someone who feels they've been underestimated, underrated and mistreated by the world. Demographically, he's right there where a profiler would say, 'Yeah.'" As far as his career choice as a forensic investigator, "That's exactly the kind of job that a serial killer would want to take up. That's exactly the interests that a serial killer would have. [But] he always appears slightly weedy. Is he concealing strength or is he really that flaccid a person? It's hard to tell."

The Mentalist kicks off Season 6 Sunday at 10/9c on CBS.

In Season 2, Episode 8 : 'His Red Right Hand' Red John has Rebecca - who is Bosco's assistant - take out the Task Force in order to get Jane back on the case. As she is taken down to the cells, Red John walks by her and rubs a contact poison on her arm. The only way for that to work is that is HAD to be someone who "belonged" in the innermost of "Secured" facilites ... whch would eliminate Brett Stiles, Bob Kirkland, and Reede Smith.

The Mentalist Recap: The Search For Red John Heats Up [ [Spoiler Alert !

The Mentalist moved forward in the hunt for serial killer Red John on Sunday, offering fans a sudden and shocking death along the way. In the episode, titled “Red Listed,” someone steals Patrick Jane’s fake list of Red John suspects, one that she made to throw off anyone who might want to interfere with her search. Soon after the list is taken, the people on it start to show up dead.

The episode starts with one of those unlucky people on the list, Benjamin Marx, who has been found dead underneath a bridge. For those who remember back to Season 4, Marx is the man who was buried alive by Jane to get him to confess to murder.

FBI Agent Reede Smith, himself one of the seven Red John suspects, said he think Patrick is responsible for the murder.

Patrick tells Teresa about the fake list and how it turned up missing, leading the two to suspect that someone high up the police rankings could be behind the murder.

The team decides to warn the others on the list that they may be in danger, but aren’t quick enough to save Richard Haibach, who is captured and tortured.

It turns out that it is Bob Kirkland who has captured Richard, and brings Patrick to where Richard is being held. Kirkland turns the tables on Patrick to try to get information about the real list of suspects. It turns out that Kirkland’s brother was killed by Red John, and he’s been on a personal mission to find the killer. Eventally Theresa and Madalin arrive in time to save Patrick, and Kirkland is taken into custody.

As the episode ends, Kirkland is put into the back of a police van and stripped, then taken out by a police officer and told to run. The officer then shoots and kills Kirkland, officially and brutally eliminating him from the list of Red John suspects.

If fans noticed that Sunday’s episode of The Mentalist had a bit of a darker tone, the show’s writers said that was by design. The Red John episodes take the show on a bit of a departure from its normal comic, neatly-wrapped-up nature, said writer Rebecca Cutter.

“I really enjoy writing the humor; I love writing Jane’s dialogue,” Cutter said, adding that she had to cut some of the jokes to go along with the darker episode. “This whole season has been a little gorier than normal. There are other shows out there where cutting off fingers is no big deal; that’s like nothing. But on our show, that’s darker than we usually go.”

Fans had a bit of a reprieve from the tension last week, when Wayne Rigsby (Owain Yeoman) and Grace Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti) ended years of their on-again off-again relationship and finally got married.

The bits that fans learned in Sunday’s episode about the Red John conspiracy will gain more meaning later on in the season, Cutter added. “That all will come to bear a lot, coming down into the final episode, when we reveal who Red John is,” she said. “All of that will blow up and be explored very thoroughly and have bigger implications for CBI.”

The Mentalist is expected to wrap up the Red John saga this year.

    Insider's Blog: Red Listed
    Posted on Oct 21, 2013 01:25pm

    And then there were five.

Episode 604 (“Red Listed”) ends with the demise of mysterious Homeland Security Agent Robert Kirkland. It also answers several lingering questions about Kirkland: Why did he kill Jason Lennon (ep 518)? Why did he break into Jane’s office (ep 519)? And finally, why was he in the limousine (ep 506)?

“Red Listed” differs from a typical Mentalist episode in that it doesn’t have what we (somewhat callously) refer to as a “murder of the week.” Those episodes have a structure and a rhythm that, although certainly not easy to write, are at least familiar to me. But for “Red Listed,” I was tasked with writing a purely serialized episode, a link in the Red John chain. In many ways it was like writing a different show. Although challenging, it was also super exciting (and something of an honor) to contribute to the Red John mythology and bring the show one step closer to the final reveal.

Because the episode picks up so many threads from seasons past, the cast of characters were almost entirely returnees – we didn’t need a single casting session. As a result, the episode plays like a greatest hits album – nothing but the best! From the reappearance of creepy Richard Haibach (played by William Mapother) to the powerful return of Madeleine Hightower (Aunjanue Ellis), it was a delight to see these familiar and talented faces. In particular, Kevin Corrigan gave a big, juicy, delicious performance as Agent Kirkland, and the seemingly dense FBI Agent Reede Smith is revealed to be a cold-hearted killer in a chilling performance by Drew Powell. Watch him closely.

On a personal note, I am particularly fond of this episode because the first day of shooting marked the start of my maternity leave, and the last day of shooting, September 3rd, corresponded with the birth of my daughter. Because I was on leave, my fellow writers took turns watching set for me while I stayed at home and ate bon-bons (or something like that!). Being something of a control freak, it was difficult to sit back and let everyone else do the work… but the upside was that I was able to watch the first cut of the episode with “fresh eyes.” I was delighted (but not surprised) to see that veteran Mentalist director Eric Laneuville did an amazing job as always.

Okay, baby is crying, gotta go! I hope you enjoyed the episode as much as I did.
