Steven Tyler Officially Signed On to 'American Idol?'



It sounds like dude's an 'American Idol' judge.

The Hollywood Reporter says two sources close to the talks confirm that Steven Tyler, the lead singer for the rock band Aerosmith, has signed a deal to be a judge on the upcoming season of 'American Idol.'

Tyler himself confirmed earlier in the month that he was in discussions to land the job.

Tyler and Randy Jackson are so far the only two judges on the panel, if the report is correct. Simon Cowell, Ellen DeGeneres and Kara DioGuardi will not be judges for the upcoming season, for which contestant tryouts have already begun around the country. Jennifer Lopez has been a much-discussed name for the third chair, as has Shania Twain. The report suggests that Lopez's asking price, more than $20 million for the season, caused 'AI' producers to balk and move on to Twain, who was a mentor during the past season.

Tyler is a first-rate showman with his colorful stage patter and dress. He does have a famously spotted history of drug use which includes a couple of stints in rehab. The band was reported to have broken up last year before before Tyler made peace with lead guitarist Joe Perry.

Aerosmith is currently on tour in the states. Once seated, Tyler will be the first member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to be an 'American Idol' judge.
