Duncan: ‘Dumb cuts’ from sequester will cost thousands of teachers their jobs
    Sunday, February 24, 2013

Education Secretary Arne Duncan said Sunday that sequestration would have a devastating effect on school systems around the country.

Duncan said that teachers around the country were already being informed that they won’t be retained, and that some 40,000 teachers in all could lose their jobs.

Head Start and programs for children with parents in the military could also be hurt by the $85 billion in sequester cuts, Duncan said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

“We don’t have any ability with dumb cuts like this to figure out what the right thing to do is,” Duncan said. “It just means a lot more children will not get the kinds of opportunities and services they need.”

Duncan has joined other members of the Obama administration, like Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, in trying to point out the real-world implications for the sequester, which is scheduled to go into effect on Friday.

The Education secretary added that the debate over sequestration is taking away from what could be more fruitful discussions over how to limit gun violence.

“That’s where I think we should be spending our time, is talking about how we reduce gun violence. That’s the productive use of our time,” Duncan said. “Spending time talking about stupid issues like this in Congress doesn’t make sense.”

More Obama stupidity for the sheeple.

There are over 8 MILLION teachers in America. There are well over 600,000 K-12 public schools.

So Arnie wants us to believe that if 4 teachers out of every 60 SCHOOLS loses a job, its a catastrophe?! Hell! More than that RETIRE every year!! If 0.005% of teachers lose their jobs, its a disaster?

In the private sector, about 40,000 workers have lost their jobs every WEEK during most of Obama's 4+ yr tenure. And he tells us things are "getting better".

Only the sheeple are buying this tripe.

    ...

What's dumb is having someone from Chicago in charge of our Dept of Education.

The Chicago Public Schools are the worst, most inefficient, example of failure in the USA.

    ..

Since teachers are paid for by the tax payers in that state that they are employed in, I question his ability to even estimate the number of teachers that would be affected. Or is he admitting that the federal government has been bailing out the states to pay for teachers as well as paying for the states unemployment like they have been doing in California, Illinois and New York.

    ...

Uh, Mister Duncan, you do realize almost all teachers' salaries came from either City, County, or State Budgets that have ZERO to do with The Sequester Law, right? Surely, you know that Taxpayers' Country & City Property Taxes (not Federal $) pay for almost all School expenses, right? The FACTS & Truth Kinda' blow a hole in your Fear-mongering rant, doesn't it now.

    ..

All you have to do is read a middle-school history textbook to understand how leftism works. (Noble Native American and African tribes saw land as a life source to be shared, not a commodity to be bought and sold. Only the bad white European settlers had this totally unspiritual way of viewing the earth. They brought bad karma to the Americas...yadda yadda yadda.)

In the classroom, there's so much time spent pairing off in groups of three and four for "cooperative learning" (it's bogus, just wasted playtime) that substantive, academic learning just doesn't happen. After twenty minutes of cacophony, it's time to pack up and run to the bus.

So much time and energy is spent on the latest education fad, and to fund "professional enhancement" that very little education and information is imparted from the teacher to the student in a quiet, orderly setting.

    ..

Teachers are STATE employees. They are not FEDERAL employees. Same holds true for firemen, but our affirmative-action President is trying to scare the public. His lies, spin, rhetoric, about the evils of sequestration do not hide the fact Obama CREATED the idea of the sequester. He now refuses to take ownership.

    ..

Total lie. All the programs that are looking at a "cut" have in fact gotten on average a 17% increase in monies over the last 5 years. The percentage cut due to sequestration is 2.6% which means over the last 5 years they still got over a 14% increase in monies.

    Sequestration: What is it, Really?
Written on Thursday, February 21, 2013 by Marilyn Assenheim

A look at today’s headlines is, at best, to embark on an excursion to the twilight zone. Perhaps it is more like an enforced, bad LSD trip. Leading all the rest (and there are a legion of stories) seems to be the Lyin’ King’s version of sequestration. This lunatic ride we have all found ourselves prisoner on, is a lulu.

Our Dear Leader has been lying so blatantly about just this one issue that, had he suffered Pinocchio’s curse, his schnozola would have rivaled the length of Great Wall of China. “Teachers will be laid off.” You know, all of the federally hired teachers. “Firefighters and EMT personnel will be laid off.” Certainly; all of the federally employed firefighters and emergency personnel. The narrative claims an obstructionist Right will once again have impeded the president’s tireless work on the budget. The work he was, apparently, beavering away at while on his second vacation since January, 2013…separate from his wife’s vacation. In the company of his authentic faithful companion, Reggie Love.

As if this wasn’t enough doublethink to have shoved down one’s throat, the president claims to be fighting demon sequestration tooth and nail. Reality alert: Sequestration is, lock, stock and barrel, the president’s plan. Sequestration is, exclusively, the president’s brainchild. The president’s and no one else’s. Just check speeches the president made in 2011; the country would be ruined without sequestration. Absolutely. He said so.

Sequestration was never the Republican Party’s idea, even though beltway Republicans are drooling to do the president’s bidding. With the exception of Senator Rand Paul. Senator Paul, correctly pointed out that sequestration, means a reduction in growth, not cuts to existing spending. A complicit, mainstream media will never allow that fact to be made public by them. Congressman Boehner, too, wants to throw sequestration back in the president’s lap. Unfortunately, typically, Speaker Boehner takes a good concept (albeit late) then fouls it up. Yes, he admits that sequestration is entirely the president’s invention. Yes, Mr. Boehner states that the president “broke” the economy and should be the one to fix it, but he is still gluing himself to the president’s false premise; Boehner proceeds as if sequestration deals with cuts to existing spending rather than reduction in spending increases. Some people never learn.

Some right wing pundits point out that the Republican Party will work almost as tirelessly as the president claims to, in order to prevent sequestration. Doubtless that is true. The majority of Republicans in office today seem to have spines made of Jell-O. They have proven, over and over, that they will cave in, relentlessly, to appease a left-wing that doesn’t want their cooperation. Why allow the Right any credibility when it is so easy to perpetually lie about them? To keep them, forever, as the bad guys? Orwell’s’ invention, Big Brother, would be proud.

What the pundits don’t seem to perceive is that sequestration, first and foremost, guts the military. Wednesday, the Lyin’ King announced, with mock distress, that there will be 800,000 civilian personnel cut from the military’s roles by March 1st. This would realize the president’s wet dream; he gets to decimate the military…again. All the while bemoaning the evils of sequestration at the top of his lungs. This is precisely the scenario he yearns for.

For America? It’s a lose/lose situation. For our Imperial President? Chalk up another win. With our “representatives” able assistance.

Nuclear option: Sequester could force Congress to fly… ::gulp:: commercial
    By Doug Powers • February 25, 2013 10:33 AM

There are plenty of scare scenarios being planted in the heads of the taxpaying public about the sequester, but there’s one bit of fear in particular that seems to be targeted toward certain members of Congress: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...70da_blog.html

the head of the Air Force today warned that the spending cuts that will go into effect March 1 could cause the military to eliminate those lovely miljet flights that lawmakers enjoy.

Members of Congress adore flying on Air Force jets, particularly for overseas trips — there are no security lines, check-in is a breeze, the service couldn’t be better, and it’s business class-only.

But if the government-wide cuts aren’t thwarted and the military has to pinch pennies, lawmakers might have to kiss those perks goodbye, Air Force Secretary Michael Donley told the crowd at the Air Force Association’s winter conference in Orlando, Fla., we’re told.
I’d be more in favor this if it didn’t increase my chances of getting stuck sitting next to Chuck Schumer: ttp://www.nypost.com/p/news/politics/schumer_blasts_flight_attendant_CiF5BPT5Vc5Tb0WEqR mIfP

Government transparency quote of the day

    By Doug Powers • February 25, 2013 03:14 PM

“I won’t stop fighting to open up government” — Barack Obama, January 2010
    *****

President Obama is meeting with the nation’s governors today in Washington. http://www.usnews.com/news/politics/...with-governors At least we think so.

From Erik Wemple at the WaPo http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...ake-questions/ via Newsbusters: http://newsbusters.org/blogs/tim-gra...can-take-some-

Just a couple of moments ago, President Obama finished an address to members of the the National Governors Association at the White House by saying, “What I want to do is clear out the press so we can take some questions.”
Wow, somebody’s tired of being asked about golfing with Tiger Woods.

What did the press do in the meantime? They certainly wouldn’t have been welcome to go to one of Joe Biden’s Transparency Board meetings. http://michellemalkin.com/2010/11/09...-transparency/

Obama weekly address: Congress must act now to stop the ‘Republican’ sequester that I insisted be included in that bill I signed
    By Doug Powers • February 23, 2013 07:30 PM

President Obama gave his weekly address on Saturday, and he was surprisingly candid in admitting that sequestration was at least in part the idea of the White House, and that the cuts can be realigned to limit the impact so it won’t be as bad as many are reporting.

If you didn’t believe a word of the previous sentence, good on you: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/vid...sequester.html

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZS-v...layer_embedded

But here’s the thing: these cuts don’t have to happen. Congress can turn them off anytime with just a little compromise. They can pass a balanced plan for deficit reduction. They can cut spending in a smart way, and close wasteful tax loopholes for the well-off and well-connected.

Unfortunately, it appears that Republicans in Congress have decided that instead of compromising – instead of asking anything of the wealthiest Americans – they would rather let these cuts fall squarely on the middle class.

Here’s what that choice means. Once these cuts take effect, thousands of teachers and educators will be laid off, and tens of thousands of parents will have to scramble to find child care for their kids. Air traffic controllers and airport security will see cutbacks, causing delays across the country. Even President Bush’s director of the National Institutes of Health says these cuts will set back medical science for a generation.
How bad will it really be? The other day Yuval Levin at NRO gave it some perspective: http://www.nationalreview.com/corner...on-yuval-levin

So why is the president talking about firing all the firemen and watching half the country die of food poisoning? He’s doing it for political effect, of course. But he’s able to do it because the sequester is targeted largely at discretionary spending. Under the sequester, discretionary spending (including both domestic and defense) will equal $1.213 trillion in 2013. It was $1.285 trillion in 2012, so it would indeed see a decline of about $72 billion from last year to this year. Discretionary spending in 2013 would thus be roughly equal to what it was in 2009—that dreadful year of federal government austerity. Of that total reduction from 2012 spending, about $43 billion would be cut from defense-discretionary spending and about $29 billion would come out of domestic-discretionary spending. The president’s scare tactics focus almost exclusively on the domestic-discretionary portion, so he is saying that our economy and government will basically cease to function because we will be spending $29 billion less on these domestic-discretionary programs this year than last year. $29 billion is about what the federal government spends in 72 hours. In fact, because this year is not a leap year while last year was, about a third of that spending cut was going to happen anyway across the federal budget.
When the government wants to spend an additional $29 billion, they tell us it’s a drop in the bucket and we won’t even notice. But when they are faced with cutting that much from domestic discretionary spending, suddenly this is what we’re in for: http://youtu.be/2uYuw7Ztrps

So who is most responsible for the idea of sequestration? The other day, Montana Democrat Sen. Max Baucus said of the sequester, “the White House recommended it, frankly.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAd1trp0rgk

In 2011, President Obama seemed to agree: There should be no easy off ramps in the fiscal deal and “I will veto any efforts to undo the sequester”: http://www.nationalreview.com/corner...r-pete-hegseth http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqD2h...layer_embedded

Also, Joe Biden said the sequester was the overwhelming redeeming feature of the fiscal deal. http://www.breitbart.com/Breitbart-T...itbart+Feed%29 That and buy a shotgun.

As for the cuts, CNN’s not exactly trying to quell the manufactured panic: http://twitchy.com/2013/02/22/cnn-wa...slasher-stuff/

Last but not least, Doug Ross has a transcript of the secret meeting between Obama and House Republicans. http://www.directorblue.blogspot.com...residents.html

Update: The White House adds to the list of those who would be affected by the sequester: http://t.co/CcPpG08B3J
What you need to know about the sequester: on.wh.gov/X0OV0dE This is people living with mental illness: twitter.com/whitehouse/sta…

    — The White House (@whitehouse) February 24, 2013
The White House was also going to warn of human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together and mass hysteria, but fears of copyright infringement lawsuits from Columbia Pictures have kept them from doing that… so far. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0POXW4V1_k

Rest easy, because President Obama’s paycheck is exempted from the sequester
    By Doug Powers • February 26, 2013 12:37 PM

President Obama has been busy blaming Republicans for the sequester even though he insisted on the option being included in the bill he signed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqD2h...layer_embedded It’s unlikely however that Republicans were the ones to insert the presidential pay exemption into the sequester rules: http://cnsnews.com/news/article/obam...pted-sequester

President Barack Obama won’t have to worry about his paycheck if the spending sequestration included in the Budget Control Act that he signed into law in 2011 begins taking effect this Friday.

A report published last month by the Congressional Research Service — “Budget Sequestration and Selected Program Exemptions and Special Rules” — identifies certain programs that are exempt from sequestration and lays out special rules that govern the sequestration of others.

Section 255 of the Budget Control Act includes “Compensation for the President” as one of those exemptions (Page 19).
    Flashback:
“Everybody’s going to have to give. Everybody’s going to have to have some skin in the game”

    — Barack Obama, January 2009.
    http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics...a-calls-for-2/

In other sequestration news, President Obama is hitting the road to urge people http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-250_162-...ster-strategy/ to contact their members of Congress to help stop the looming impact of the bill he signed into law: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Ob...ct_of_2011.jpg

With just a few days left to convince Congress to avert the so-called sequester spending cuts, President Obama today travels to a part of the country where the cuts could hit the hardest: Virginia’s shipyards.

Mr. Obama is visiting Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries in Newport News, Virginia. If the sequester goes into effect, it could have a direct and clear impact on Virginia’s shipbuilding industry — the Navy would cancel the maintenance of 11 ships in Norfolk, according to the White House, and it would delay and defer other projects in the state. Furthermore, cuts that impact Newport News Shipbuilding could reverberate across the country, since the company has a supplier base in all 50 states.

The sequester will cut around $85 billion in federal spending this year and around $1.1 trillion more over the next 10 years. The White House said Mr. Obama’s trip today is an opportunity to highlight the “devastating impact” the sequester will have “if Congressional Republicans fail to compromise to avert the sequester by March 1st.”
As far as “big picture” stuff, via the Mercatus Center, here’s a graph showing federal spending for the next several years with and without the sequester — everybody panic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0GFRcFm-aY

Rep. Goodlatte Blasts Obama for Releasing Illegal Alien Inmates to ‘Promote His Political Agenda on Sequestration’
    February 26, 2013..

(CNSNews.com) – House Judiciary Committee Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) said Tuesday that the Obama administration's decision to release from detention centers hundreds of illegal aliens is “abhorrent” and charged that the move is not only political but dangerous. “It’s abhorrent that President Obama is releasing criminals into our communities to promote his political agenda on sequestration,” Goodlatte said in a statement. “By releasing criminal immigrants onto the streets, the administration is needlessly endangering American lives. “It also undermines our efforts to come together with the administration and reform our nation’s immigration laws,” Goodlatte said. “Unfortunately, this administration has a poor record of enforcing our immigration laws and has routinely sought to undermine them.”

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which is in charge of the releases through the Department of Homeland Security, described the illegal aliens as “low priority.”

In a statement sent to reporters on Tuesday, an ICE spokeswoman said the “possible sequestration” led them to release those illegal aliens.

"As fiscal uncertainty remains over the continuing resolution and possible sequestration, ICE has reviewed its detained population to ensure detention levels stay within ICE’s current budget,” ICE’s Gillian Christensen said. “Over the last week, ICE has reviewed several hundred cases and placed these individuals on methods of supervision less costly than detention. “All of these individuals remain in removal proceedings,” Christensen said. “Priority for detention remains on serious criminal offenders and other individuals who pose a significant threat to public safety.”
