Venezuela denies Chavez in critical condition

CARACAS (AFP) – The Venezuelan government rejected reports Sunday that President Hugo Chavez is in critical condition following emergency surgery in Cuba, insisting the firebrand leftist leader was "recovering well."

Chavez's government said he had an operation for a pelvic abscess on June 10 and continues to mend.

"He is recovering," Information Minister Andres Izarra told AFP in the wake of a report by Miami's El Nuevo Herald citing unnamed US intelligence sources as saying the 56-year-old "is in critical condition -- not on the brink of death, but critical indeed."

The newspaper also said the sources refused to comment on rumors in Venezuela that Chavez could be receiving treatment for prostate cancer.

The Venezuelan government has not addressed details of Chavez's condition, and angry opposition lawmakers in Caracas say it is unconstitutional for the president to be governing from abroad.

But several top Venezuelan figures have dismissed the reports.

The president of the National Assembly, Fernando Soto Rojas, denied the cancer rumors, saying he was confident Chavez would be back on July 5. "You'll see, we'll have him back here in Venezuela at full strength in just a few days," he said.

Sunday masses were celebrated across the country, along with indigenous rituals that wished the president a good recovery. "Chavez will be around for a long time," Vice President Elias Jaua told reporters.

The president's brother, meanwhile, has told Venezuelan state media that Chavez could return to Caracas in about two weeks.

Speaking from Chavez's home region of Barinas in the west, his mother Elena Frias also said she prayed for a speedy recovery. "Blessings for my beloved son. May the power of my blessed God heal him and bring him home to me quickly," she said.

And Izarra urged his Twitter followers to not repeat rumors, saying Chavez "is recovering well from his operation."

The Venezuelan president's enemies "should stop dreaming, and his friends should stop being nervous," senior diplomat Temir Porras tweeted.

Chavez himself fired off a brief Twitter message saying that his daughter and three grandchildren had arrived in Cuba to visit him.

The uncharacteristic silence from someone known for his verbal omnipresence left some foes speculating that Chavez might have had plastic surgery, or might want to drum up sympathy for his illness ahead of a 2012 election in which he will seek a third term.

He had been rushed into emergency surgery during a scheduled visit to Cuba after suffering sharp pain diagnosed as a pelvic abscess that required immediate surgery.

Chavez is Communist Cuba's main economic and political ally. His cut-rate oil keeps the cash-strapped and isolated Raul Castro regime afloat.

With both presidents facing tight re-election fights, Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez gave a surprise endorsement to Barack Obama on Sunday – and said the U.S. leader no doubt felt the same.

“I hope this doesn’t harm Obama, but if I was from the United States, I’d vote for Obama,” the socialist Chavez said of a man he first reached out to in 2009 but to whom he has since generally been insulting.

Chavez is running for a new six-year term against opposition challenger Henrique Capriles, while Obama seeks re-election in November against Republican candidate Mitt Romney. Venezuela’s election is next weekend.

Chavez Death Watch: wild ride gets wilder

This rollercoaster seems to be going out of control and could soon jump the rails. Hang on.

The Associated Press, the BBC, and other major news outlets are focusing on the latest official pronouncements from government functionaries in Caracastan: Hugo Chavez has developed yet another lung infection and is being treated for that. The infection is described as "severe" and his condition is now officially confirmed as "very delicate." The Chavistas still insist that their Caudillo is being treated at a military hospital in Caracas, and that he is undergoing chemotherapy and other "complimentary" treatments. Given the fact that the unsteady leadership in Caracastan prefers to remain tight-lipped about Chavez's condition, this dire report may be a clear sign that the end is very near for the ailing dictator, and that the public is being prepared for the inevitable.

Communication Minister for Caracastan, Ernesto VillegasVillegas is quoted as saying that Chavez was “standing by Christ and life conscious of the difficulties he faces.”

Villegas also took the opportunity to lash out at “the corrupt Venezuelan right” for what he called a psychological war seeking “scenarios of violence as a pretext for foreign intervention.”

He called on Chavez’s supporters, who include thousands of well-armed militiamen, to be “on a war footing.”

Spain's ABC, as usual, claims to have much more dramatic inside information: according to their sources, Hugo Chavez has been flown back to Castrogonia in an air ambulance, due to his worsening condition and the need for sophisticated medical equipment that was not available on the island of La Orchila, where he had been secretly stashed away since last week. ABC also continues to insist that a very large fast-growing tumor has been found in one of his lungs.

One change in ABC's reporting surfaced today, however. Whereas ABC had previously reported that Chavez was so close to the end that he was only receiving palliative care, today's report suggests that doctors are frantically trying to prolong his life as much as possible due to infighting among Chavista factions in Caracastan. Apparently, the followers of Nicolas "Saddamito" Maduro (vice-president and appointed heir) and Diosdado Cabello (president of the National Assembly) -- and Raul Castro's minions in Havana -- are engaged in a fierce struggle for ultimate control, and are all eager to prolong the constitutional limbo created by Chavez's invisibility.

In other words, the top Chavistas and the Castronoids are playing musical chairs. As long as Chavez is breathing, or as long as they can pretend that he is still breathing, the music continues to play and each competitor has more time to consolidate power. As soon as the dictator's death is announced, the music stops and the scramble for the chair -- or throne -- begins in earnest, and there can only be one winner.

Based on what Carter and Serrano said, you’d think that Chavez created a socialist utopia where poverty had been virtually eliminated, Sean Penn spent his days in Caracas handing out free “I-heart-Hugo” candies and the worst human rights offense that ever occurred in the country was a mandatory national viewing of I Am Sam.

It’s all relative. When you start with a country that had a 30% poverty rate and then redistribute wealth thus driving most of it out of the country, then everyone is poor so the original poor feel empowered.

The kind of praise he is getting from morons sounds familiar. It is the same stupid stuff coming from the MSM about Obama. And I don’t consider Obama any better than Chavez! The US is turning into one big Detroit right before our eyes.
