Re: Omgg ugly lil thing
I think they are so cute & the babies to. We have them living in our back yard. Last year the mommy decided to have them in my garage..what a shock i got when i got in my car and saw 8 little eyes looking at me lol. Then 2 weeks ago i went out behind the garage and saw one under the bush , thought it was sleeping so left it alone, when it didn't move for a few days i knew some thing was wrong got a little closer and saw it wasn't breathing any more
. asked my brother to come over and help me with it. I sure hope it died of old age and some one in my neighbor hood did poison it . I would love to have one as a pet but i know its not good.

These things are in Oregon now....shudder...reminds me of the time we saw one in our yard that looked like it had a major run in with a shredder. One eye was blind it's ear was chewed off , there were patches of hair missing.
Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused.

Re: Omgg ugly lil thing
Oh, but they are ugly! I was sitting on my moms back porch - here came a mommy with her babies hanging on her back. The last one in the row didn't have a good place to grip and he kept sliding off and scrambling back on. Cute, but not really!
Sometimes, the good you do doesn't do you any good.

Re: Omgg ugly lil thing
We had one in our yard here in NY. We live in a very populated area right by a highway. But we also have some woods near. We were surprised to see it walk across the road & right into our yard.
I thought it was cute.

~soft laugh~ I think possums are adorable, and they're incredibly smart animals. I used to do wild animal rehab, and I've raised just about everything. One good thing about having possums around, you won't have trouble with rats, mice, or snakes... they'll eat them. I had people beg me for my babies when I was rehabbing, wanting one to keep under their house.
Just some extra information on them: they're actually very gentle natured, will only hiss if they're scared, they DO have lots of sharp teeth, but they are NOT aggressive animals and can't fight well at all and they will literally pass out if they get cornered or attacked, it's a self-defense mechanism that just happens to them. They love dog and/or cat food, and they're one of the cleanest animals around. They groom and bathe themselves meticulously and constantly, even while eating. Contrary to what most people think, they're not related to rats... they're marsupials, closely related to the kangaroo family. Another important note, their body temps stay so low, that's it's *extremely hard/rare for a possum to get/carry rabies. Not impossible, but very, very rare and difficult.
~has to laugh here~ One little guy I raised once, we released back out in the fields, and he kept "coming back home". My girls couldn't believe it was the same one, because it got to the point where we were driving him far distances, putting him in a field with plenty of water and dog food and corn (until he could become acclimated to that particular area and find his own food), and by gosh, within two days, he'd be back home, every time. I finally painted his tail with hot pink fingernail polish to prove to them it was the same possum, and we drove him over a mile from our farm, turned down several different roads, put him in a huge corn field, again with food and water... and two days later, there he sat at our house. Bright pink fingernail-polished tail. And I swear he was grinning. ~laughing~ Gotta love these guys.
