    Re: An inconvenient truth

    AL GORE'S HELL ON EARTH
Wed Jun 6, 6:43 PM ET

Al Gore calls it, "The Assault on Reason," but his brand of environmentalism sounds a lot more like a new form of faith.

In his book "An Inconvenient Truth," Al Gore confesses that global warming: "offers us the chance to experience what very few generations in history have had the privilege of knowing: a generational mission ; the exhilaration of a compelling moral purpose ; a shared and unifying cause ; the thrill of being forced by circumstances to put aside the pettiness and conflict that so often stifle the restless human need for transcendence; the opportunity to rise ...

"When we do rise, it will fill our spirits and bind us together. Those who are now suffocating in cynicism and despair will be able to breathe freely. Those who are now suffering from a loss of meaning in their lives will find hope." When we rise, "we will experience an epiphany as we discover that this crisis is not really about politics at all. It is a moral and spiritual challenge."

Transcendence, epiphany, loss of meaning, hope . No, this is not really about politics, or science either, is it, Al? Al Gore's new role is prophet, calling us urgently to convert on carbons or perish, lest rising temperatures create Hell on Earth.

Environmentalism, as a movement, seems to breed such prophets. The mother of them all was Rachel Carson, whose 100th birthday we just finished celebrating. "Silent Spring," which launched modern environmentalism, began with an outright fable, a secular Eden: "There was once a town in the heart of America where all life seemed to live in harmony with its surroundings." But lately, an "evil spell" threatened to "silence the rebirth of new life." Many of Rachel Carson's scientific claims -- such as that pesticides were causing cancer -- were not consistent with the scientific evidence, points out John Tierney in the science section of The New York Times this week.

In a fat, rich country like America, the kind of "chemophobia" Carson championed only led us to waste money on various kinds of nonessential cleanups. In the developing world, the fear of DDT has led to massive human deaths from malaria over the last 40 years. But somehow the halos on environmental prophets remain unaffected by the human destruction their dogmas wreak.

I am not qualified to evaluate the scientific case for global warming. But three things about global warming give me pause.

    1. It transforms the United States, as the world's most successful economy, into the chief evildoer in the world;

    2. It justifies a massive extension of government power to regulate all aspects of our lives;

    3. It makes having children a sin against the Earth. (Indeed, China recently justified its coercive one-child policy on carbon-reducing grounds.)

Arguments from nature almost never work in any other American context. Try talking about limiting people's sexual behavior, artificial reproduction or experiments on human embryos because "It's not nice to fool Mother Nature," and see what happens. Al Gore tries to tell you that it's because, in this case, the religion is backed up by solid science. I don't think that explains it.

Science is an open, nonideological endeavor, which means scientific truths are constantly being revised. Only some of these scientific truths end up entering the cultural bloodstream. Maggie Law: The amount of scientific evidence needed to establish a moral truth is inversely proportional to the degree to which this truth is congruent with liberalism's moral ends.

Efforts to cut off the scientific debate and to malign the characters of nonconforming scientists are another disturbing sign. If opposition to global warming measures is to be portrayed as an "assault on reason," then the voices of reason who oppose them must be shut down.

The thing is, for Al Gore and his followers, global warming is just such a doggone convenient truth.

I didn't mean the people from Tennessee were dumb, I meant the people sendng hate letters to the people in Tennessee were dumb since they don't even know Gore if from there. So that makes the haters even more dumb to attack Tennessee.

Gore completes renovations to Tenn. home
By ERIK SCHELZIG, Associated Press Writer
Thu Dec 13, 5:16 PM ET

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Al Gore, who was criticized for high electric bills at his Tennessee mansion, has completed a host of improvements to make the home more energy efficient, and a building-industry group has praised the house as one of the nation's most environmentally friendly.

The former vice president has installed solar panels, a rainwater-collection system and geothermal heating. He also replaced all incandescent lights with compact fluorescent or light-emitting diode bulbs — even on his Christmas tree.

"Short of tearing it down and staring anew, I don't know how it could have been rated any higher," said Kim Shinn of the U.S. Green Building Council, which gave the house its second-highest rating for sustainable design.

Gore's improvements cut the home's summer electrical consumption by 11 percent compared with a year ago, according to utility records reviewed by The Associated Press. Most Nashville homes used 20 percent to 30 percent more electricity during the same period because of a record heat wave.

Shinn said Gore's renovations are impressive because his home, which is more than 80 years old, had to meet the same rigorous standards as new construction.

"One of the things that is tremendously powerful about what the Gores have done is demonstrate that you can take a home that was a dog, and absolute energy pig, and do things to correct that," Shinn said.

Gore bought the mansion in the Nashville suburb of Belle Meade in 2002 for $2.3 million. It houses his offices and those of his wife, Tipper, as well as a commercial kitchen for formal events.

Gore spokeswoman Kalee Kreider declined to say how much the couple spent on the improvements.

"The Gores decided to take a series of steps over time that might be logistically or financially out of reach for many Americans," she said. "But they were fortunate enough to have the ability to do so.

"But everyone can get started, whether it's changing light bulbs or purchasing green power."

In February, a conservative think tank criticized Gore for using an average of 16,000 kilowatt hours a month for an average monthly bill of $1,206 in 2006. The typical Nashville home uses about 1,300 kilowatt hours a month.

Gore has said the criticism was unfair because the 10,000-square-foot mansion was undergoing extensive remodeling. He said this week that "global warming denier" groups were trying to discredit him because they don't like the attention he has given to climate change.

"You're going to have people try to attack the messenger in order to get at the message. They have not been able to succeed," Gore told CNN from Norway, where he picked up the Nobel Peace Prize for his environmental work.

"The only way to solve this crisis is for individuals to make changes in their own lives," he said.

The Green Building Council's certification program has four levels, with platinum being the highest followed by gold. Gore's home was one of 14 to earn gold status and the only Tennessee home to earn any certification.

Electricity usage at the home remains well above regional averages, but Gore's power consumption decreased by 6,890 kilowatt hours, or 11 percent, between June and August, despite the heat wave.

Gore's electric use increased again after he had to take his solar panels off-line in August so his new geothermal system could be integrated into the system. But his natural gas use has dropped 93 percent in the three months since the geothermal pump was activated.

When the Gores' heated pool is hooked up to the system later this month, their energy use is expected to decline more, his spokeswoman said.

Gore has also said he invests in renewable energy such as solar and wind power to balance 100 percent of his electricity usage.

Stephen Smith, executive director of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, said the size of Gore's house limits how much he can cut his energy consumption.

"We all need to evaluate what we legitimately need in square footage," he said.

Still, another owner of the same house likely would not have been as dedicated as Gore to reducing energy consumption, said Smith, who also serves on the advisory committee for Gore's Alliance for Climate Protection.

"I promise you the energy use would be as high, if not higher," he said.

Round 2: Al Gore again denies that cashing out to foreign oil is in any way hypocritical
    By Doug Powers • January 30, 2013 02:47 PM

Even some on the left are having a hard time looking the other way at Al Gore’s latest round of hypocrisy. Gore, who is making the rounds promoting a new book, has been questioned by the likes of Matt Lauer http://michellemalkin.com/2013/01/29...nt-al-jazeera/ and MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski for cashing out to oil-backed Al Jazeera. http://newsbusters.org/blogs/jeffrey...chasing-curren

Last night even David Letterman couldn’t help but bring it up: http://www.mediaite.com/tv/letterman...limate-change/

The pair then went on to discuss Al Jazeera further, including its country of origin, Qatar — for which Gore used the descriptor “gas and oil.”

“So you’re selling this television network to a gas and oil supported emirate,” Letterman remarked. “Isn’t that one of the problems with global warming, our dependence on petroleum-producing countries?”

    “Yes, it is,” Gore said.

“So you, Al Gore,” Letterman interjected, “are doing business with this country that’s enabling your ultimate foe of climate change.”

“I think I understand what you’re getting at, Dave,” Gore replied, “but I disagree with it.”
Gore then offered the rationale that “they [Qatar] have ambitious plans to develop renewables in the region.” I think he’s telling the truth too because Al’s check for tens of millions of dollars is drawn on the “Bank of the Future Renewable Energy Ministry of Solar, Wind, Geothermal, Algae and Oryx Flatulence.”

Qatar has the highest per-capita greenhouse gas emissions of any country in the world — second highest if Al Gore ever declares national sovereignty. http://green.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/...een&seid=auto#

I’ll take ‘global warming alarmists who cashed out to big oil’ for $500, Alex
    By Doug Powers • February 21, 2013 04:03 PM

Al Gore was given an entire category on Jeopardy! earlier this week to help him hawk his latest book: http://thehill.com/blogs/e2-wire/e2-...te-on-jeopardy

Former Vice President Gore dropped in on TV sets across the country Tuesday to offer his wisdom on The Future.

Gore read off clues on “Jeopardy!” in a category titled after his new book, The Future, which he is promoting nationwide.
    [...]
Aside from climate, Gore’s “Jeopardy!” appearance also touched on China’s emergence as the world’s top manufacturer, outsourcing, erosion of topsoil and thermodynamics.
Nothing screams credibility on environmental issues like a self-proclaimed clean energy crusader who just made upwards of $100 million by selling his cable network to a media outlet controlled by an oil emirate. http://michellemalkin.com/2013/01/30/round-2-al-gore/

    A Tale of Two Houses

If you’re like me, you most likely receive hundreds of emails each week featuring interesting stories. And some, like the Tale of Two Houses, are definitely worth posting. I did some extra research, per usual, and, of course, verified the details.

    Read and enjoy!

    House #1

A 20 room mansion (not including 8 bathrooms) heated by natural gas.

Add on a pool (and a pool house) and a separate guest house, all heated by gas.

In one month this residence consumes more energy than the average American household does in a year. The average bill for electricity and natural gas runs over $2400 per month.

In natural gas alone, this property consumes more than 20 times the national average for an American home.

This house is not situated in a Northern or Midwestern ‘snow belt’ area. It’s in the South.

    Compare that house to…

    House #2

This is the Prairie Chapel Ranch house, was designed by David Heymann, an associate professor of architecture at the University of Texas at Austin and graduate of Harvard Graduate School of Design.

The structure incorporates every ‘green’ feature current home construction can provide. The house is 4,000 square feet (4 bedrooms) and is nestled on a high prairie in the American southwest.

    Architecture details: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prairie_Chapel_Ranch

The one-story, eight-room, ground-level house runs east and west. There are no stairs, even at entrances. There are no thresholds. For the most part, the house is one room wide, making for easy ventilation.

The porch is the usual route from one room to another. A few rooms have interior doors. “Every room has a relationship with something in the landscape that’s different from the room next door,” Heymann says. “Each of the rooms feels like a slightly different place.”

In the guest bathroom, for example, when you look up from the sink, you look out on an oak tree rather than into a mirror, which is on a side wall. “There’s a great grove of oak trees to the west that protects it from the late afternoon sun,” Heymann says. “Then there is a view out to the north looking at hills, and to the east out over a lake, and the view to the south running out to beautiful hills.”

A central closet in the house holds geothermal heat-pumps drawing ground water through pipes sunk 300 feet into the ground, where the temperature is a constant 67 degrees. The 67° water heats the house in the winter and cools it in the summer. The system uses no fossil fuels such as oil or natural gas, and it consumes one-quarter electricity required for a conventional heating/cooling system.

The water for the outdoor pool is heated with the same system, which proved so efficient that initial plans to install solar energy panels were cancelled.

Rainwater from the roof is collected and funneled into a 25,000 gallon underground cistern. Wastewater from showers, sinks and toilets goes into underground purifying tanks and then into the cistern. The collected water then irrigates the land surrounding the house.

Surrounding flowers and shrubs native to the area enable the property to blend into the surrounding rural landscape.
Now for the good part…the inconvenient truth!

    Energy-hogging House #1…

Situated outside Nashville Tennessee, is the home of Global Warming Environmentalist Loon Al Gore.

Thoughtfully-designed, clean, green and efficient House #2?

Why that would be the Prairie Chapel Ranch near Crawford, Texas…the home of none other than George W. Bush and his lovely wife, Laura.

An outstanding example of leading by example (GWB) and NOT practicing what you preach (algore). Of course he can always claim that he is breaking even because of all of the carbon credits he buys (at least he claims he does.)

Another 'interesting' thing is - which one has gotten filthy rich over environmental issues?
