Two die in wreck
By Jason Harris

A man and his stepson and an elderly disabled man died in separate incidents in Colbert County on Friday night.
James Allen Fountain, 34, of Leighton, and his stepson, 12-year-old Cody Randell Fisher, died in a two-car accident at Gnat Pond Road and Sixth Street near Muscle Shoals. The other man involved in the wreck, 25-year-old Nicky J. Williams, 670 Byrd St., Cherokee, was airlifted to Huntsville Hospital. He was in surgical intensive care Saturday night.
Alabama State Trooper Brad Owens investigated the accident. He said Williams was headed south on Gnat Pond Road in a Chevy S-10 and ran a stop sign.
He collided with Fountain and Fisher going approximately 55 mph at 10:30 p.m., according to Owens.
The trooper said there was no evidence Williams braked before striking Fountain’s 2003 Ford Focus station wagon.
Owens said Williams was driving under the influence of alcohol. The trooper found an almost empty whiskey bottle in Williams’ truck and said the man smelled of alcohol when he was pulled from the wreck.
There is no stop sign on Sixth Street at that intersection.
The two vehicles went airborne, landing about 250 feet from the road in the almost dry pond. Nitrate City Volunteer Fire Department Chief Eddie Osborn said Williams’ truck appeared as if it rolled over several times.
“He was ejected through the back window,” Osborn said.
Osborn was the first to arrive and performed first aid on the unconscious Williams. Owens said the man was conscious and talking when he was taken to Huntsville. Osborn said the Ford station wagon was nearly cut in two from the force of the impact.
“It was as bad as we’ve seen as far as an accident,” he said. “It looked like a Coke can you take and wad up in your hand.”
Colbert County Coroner Jim Heffernan declared Fountain and Fisher dead at the scene. Fisher was identified by his report card.
“You pull a report card from a 12-year-old’s back pocket – it’s disheartening,” he said.
