A Research Study for Women with Mobility Impairments(pays up to $30)
Decisions for Transitions: A Research Study for Women with Mobility Impairments
All women face a key health care decision during menopause: whether to take hormone therapy (HT), but recent medical findings have made this decision difficult for many women. Those with mobility impairments face special concerns because many enter menopause with decreased weight bearing and aerobic activity. Therefore, they may be at greater risk for osteoporosis and cardiovascular problems. Women who experience temperature fluctuations as part of their disability may find menopausal hot flashes particularly troublesome. While HT might control these symptoms, its benefits must be weighed against the potential for increased risk of blood clots, as well as the long-term risk of breast cancer. The aim of this study is to test a decision aid designed to assist menopausal women with mobility impairments in making informed choices about hormone therapy use.
If you are already taking hormones and trying to decide whether to continue or quit, or if you are trying to decide if you should start taking hormones, we hope you will consider participating in this study. The purpose of the study is not to encourage or discourage women from using hormone therapy. Instead, it is focused on helping you use the latest available information to make an informed choice about this important menopausal health decision.
Should you decide to participate, we will send you questionnaires to complete and return to us by mail. These questionnaires ask about your health, what you know about hormone therapy, and what you think about taking it. When we receive your completed questionnaires, we will send you an educational booklet that discusses health issues for women as they move into menopause. We estimate that it will take you 1-2 hrs. to review the educational booklet and complete the accompanying questionnaire packet. When you return the 2nd completed questionnaire packet to us, we will send you a $ 20 money order as thanks for the time you have taken to complete the questionnaire packets. Six months later, we will send you a third set of questionnaires, which should take about 30 minutes to complete. When you return that completed questionnaire packet, we will send you a $ 10. money order.
If you are interested in participating in this study, please print and complete the attached flyer and send it to: heatherbecker@mail.utexas.edu. We look forward to hearing from you!
