old ceiling fan help - cap to ceiling gap
my 30 year old condo has a lighted ceiling fan - original equipment... old.
please tell me my old fan will not fall out of the ceiling.
my idiot upstairs neighbor and his buddy tried to touch the ceiling or shoot a basket by jumping at the same time or such - all i know (ha ha they said "something" just fell" funny they could not tell me what fell) I heard a huge bang just after they had noisily bounded up the stairs and into their unit.
I looked up to see my ceiling fan swaying and a big gap between the top cover of fan on one side and the hole in the ceiling for it. Looks like there is a small prong on the cover that needs to poked back into the hole. I turned the circuit breaker off but it turns off everything in my small living room and attached dining kitchen area. It is much to heavy and high for me using my 3 step ladder to get to.
. i watched some ceiling fan install videos and it looks like they are hung on a safety bar inside the hole - so hoping it is just the cover piece that is loose and not the fan itself. Would normally have a friend come over to fix it but he is recovering from surgery this week and do not bother him . gonna try to find a long sturdy thin stick to poke it back in maybe broom and mop handles are too thick to use
Last month the idiot was jumping off his couch over and over above my head in the living room (no fixtures there) -bang, bang bang bang -until i rapped on the ceiling and yelled out the door. and this was while he nightly chased stomped and jumped after his little 4yr old daughter- my guess is "playing" to wear her out to go to sleep. I complained to the condo assn. and only occasionally hear him join in any more but the daughter still runs jumps and stamps thru the unit until near midnite each nite. Lot of noise for a small kid

I asked my husband, he has installed a couple here in the house. He said he can't say it won't fall cause there is different ways to install them.
I would not be under it in case it should fall. I would get someone in to check it out for safety reasons.
Let the condo assn know what happened and maybe they will check it for you. I don't know if you rent or own, if you rent they will have to fix it but if you own then I have no idea how that works, I'm guessing it is on you to fix it then.
I would also let the upstairs neighbor who caused this know, you will be informing the condo assn. about this.
Sounds like your upstairs neighbor is a kid himself with all the jumping.

thanks Eyore- not so worried about it falling on as about sparking a fire from the wiring, the switch is off and I have removed all the glass and bulbs. but cannot survive with the circuit off
I stacked and wedged a box on top a chair on top of the dining room table (which I cannot move by myself) under it and it is stable and cannot fall now. Thinking if I leave the house or sleep I will turn the circuit off until I can get someone in.
Yes the guy is young. They are renters. I own mine. Condo assoc does not do repairs inside the units. I need a taller ladder and some vacation time.
Every one I know is out of town this weekend or busy. Will try to find someone to come. I was out of work for 4 years and now am back at the same job making 25% less than before. i do not get paid if I do not work. They will not pay sick days without a doctors note. I get 10 days vacation but the company building I work in is closed on 16 days for holidays each year, so basically I get 4 days paid vacation that I can choose, which i already used for a nephews wedding out of state,

Your welcome, I never thought of a fire, only falling. That may not be a bad idea turn the circuit off when your not around or sleeping. Not worth taking any chances.
Sounds like you have it braced pretty good so it can't fall.
Maybe you can find someone soon to come in and look at it, I'm sure you aren't going to want it sitting like it is for any length of time if you can help it.
I'm guessing cause you were out of work for 4 years you lost seniority in the place you worked and that is why you aren't getting paid the same. That is if it is the same place.
That stinks on your vacation days like that. Nice you get 16 days off cause of holidays but I can see where you would want to pick your vacation time otherwise. I hope those 16 days holiday is paid time off.
