Man finds woman with same name as ex to join him on round-the-world trip

    http://www.theguardian.com/world/201...und-world-trip

(Who wants to bet these two end up getting married in a few years! lol)

A Toronto man who made headlines last month by offering a free round-the-world air ticket to a woman with the same name as his ex-girlfriend has found Ms Right.

Jordan Axani, 28, and his then girlfriend, named Elizabeth Gallagher, booked heavily-discounted round-the-world air tickets in May, but their relationship ended and he didn’t want her ticket to go to waste. The ticket had a strict no-transfer policy, but since passport information was not required when booking, it can be used by any Canadian named Elizabeth Gallagher.

Axani posted his offer last month on the popular Reddit social media website, and received thousands of emails, including 18 from actual Elizabeth Gallaghers with Canadian passports.

He’s now chosen his travel mate, Elizabeth Quinn Gallagher, a 23-year-old student and part-time office administrator from Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia.

“It’s strictly a platonic trip. It’s going to be great,” Axani said.

At first the new Elizabeth Gallagher thought a trip with a stranger whose ex-girlfriend’s name is the same as hers was crazy but she hit it off with Axani after talking on the phone with him for hours.

“It definitely did seem a little bit creepy at the beginning but now that I talked to him it’s less creepy and more awesome,” she said.

She already has a boyfriend though.

“This is totally sort of like as friends,” she said. “I have a pretty serious boyfriend. We’ve been together for a while. We’re planning on buying a house and we have a puppy, so yeah I’m not really looking for anything at all.”

She acknowledged her boyfriend isn’t thrilled.

“He understands that I’ve always wanted to travel so while he’s not happy I’m taking off for nearly a month at Christmas with a random guy he’s smiling through it,” she said.

Axani, who works for an international real estate development and advisory firm, said the tickets were purchased for a couple of thousand dollars, but their cash value today would be around Canadian $5,000-$7,000 (US$4,400-$6,200, £2,800-£3,965).

The trip is scheduled to start on 21 December in New York City and continue on to Milan, Prague, Paris, Bangkok and New Delhi before ending in Toronto on 12 January. Axani said that after the breakup he deferred all other planning for the trip, such as making hotel reservations.

But since the story became public, Marriott International offered to put him and the new Elizabeth Gallagher up, in separate rooms, during their trip.

Axani said the trip will be documented and shared online. He said that he was so moved by some of the emails including one from an eight-year-old boy who said he was going blind and wanted to see the world before that happens that he and his brother created an organization called A Ticket Forward to help people who want to see the world but lack the finances to do so.

Another good day at the grocery store!

A man was paying for his food, and came up $25 short. He went out to his car to get it (he had it, just not with him), and by the time he got back inside, the 4 customers behind him had already paid for it!

They all literally tossed money at the cashier to pay for it! lol. She had about $50 in her hand!

They just told him to pay it forward!

It would be nice if this would continue into the new year, and not just for Christmas.

Special delivery: Cops help deliver baby on Philadelphia subway train

    http://www.cbsnews.com/news/special-...-subway-train/

PHILADELPHIA -- Transit officers in Philadelphia helped make a very special Christmas delivery.

The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority says two transit officers jumped into action to help a mother deliver a baby on a subway train.

Sgt. Daniel Caban and Officer Dorrell James met the Market Frankford line El train when it arrived at the 15th Street Station in Center City around 6 o'clock Thursday night.

"As soon as we got there, I could see the baby's head coming through her sweatpants, and we just went right to work," Caban told CBS radio station KYW.

It didn't take long for the baby boy to arrive.

"Both the baby and mother are doing fine," SEPTA spokeswoman Kristin Geiger said, adding that they were taken to Hahnemann University Hospital for evaluation.

"I was hoping for a quiet day, but this is worth it," Caban said. "This is what our job about."

Both of the officers are also fathers. James said the delivery went as well as he could have hoped.

"Just a good Christmas, you know," James said. "I know it's definitely a good Christmas for that family."

SEPTA Police Chief Thomas Nestel III later tweeted his congratulations.

In another tweet, Nestel joked, "For those that have asked, I have waived today's fare for our newest rider."

    Lightbulb Happy Thoughts

With all the "bad news" dominating the media ... I thought a place to post things to make others smile might be welcome. Articles, video clips, cartoons ... whatever

He Sings “Build Me Up Buttercup” In The Car And Makes A Few Friends Along The Way

    By Emerald Pellot

Be warned: After you watch this video, you’re going to have “Build Me Up Buttercup” stuck in your head.

T.J. Smith set up a camera in his car; he then begins lip syncing to the classic 1968 hit by The Foundations. Car lip syncing can be a total blast, just check out the video of this cop lip syncing to Taylor Swift or this female comedy troupe miming “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

He didn’t expect anything out of the ordinary to happen in the daunting Los Angeles traffic. Then he looked out his window and something amazing happened… Over 5 million views later, the video has gone totally viral.

“This… This is the kind of stuff that makes me love us humans,” one commenter wrote.

“This just brought so much joy to my day! We need more people doing things like this to spread simple joy. Kudos to this gentleman!” Another chimed in.

No matter how you’re feeling, after you watch this video I guarantee you’ll have a smile on your face. This is the kind of random act that shows how sweet and compassionate really are.

My favorite part comes at the 2:10 mark — but I won’t spoil the moment for you.

Watch the video and SHARE if you know someone who needs cheering up!

Officer surprises teen at graduation after breaking news that his parents died

    http://www.today.com/news/officer-er...duation-t24246

A man Kazzie Portie had never met before ended up getting him through the hardest time of his life.
Portie, 18, was home alone on May 24 when Officer Eric Ellison came to break the news that his parents, Riley and Emily, had been killed in a motorcycle accident by a drunk driver.
"We were sitting on the couch when he said 'I don't know what I'm going to do; I graduate on Saturday,'" Ellison told TODAY.com. "I said that he's going to walk and his parents will be there in spirit and that I'll make sure he gets across."

Sure enough, Ellison, 41, was standing right there onstage when Portie received his diploma from Cypress-Mauriceville High School in Orange, Texas.

"As soon as Kazzie saw me, his face lit up. It was really something," Ellison said. "We did a quick handshake, embraced in a big hug and cried, which was all right."

Ellison wasn't the only one to show support. All 244 graduating seniors and their family and friends in attendance came to their feet when Portie walked across the stage
    .

"I definitely wasn't expecting a standing ovation," said Portie, the youngest of five sons. "It was a wild feeling and it meant a lot to me and my family."

Portie attended his parents' memorial service Friday night and then woke up the next morning to graduate.

When he had second thoughts about walking across the stage, he remembered how much graduating meant to them. Riley never graduated from high school and Emily had received a GED.
In one of the last conversations Portie had with his parents, they said watching him graduate would be one of their proudest moments.

"All they talked about for the last month of their lives was how proud they were of me," Portie said. "I know it would've meant a lot to them."

That day really struck a chord with Ellison, who watched his own daughter graduate from a neighboring high school the night before Portie's graduation.

"I couldn't imagine a parent not being there to witness such a special day in their child's life," Ellison said.

Portie feels lucky to have Ellison in his life as he begins to apply to colleges. He now considers the officer a "close friend"; they even went out to lunch recently.

2 boys rescue young children from burning home in Florida
Associated Press - By MIKE SCHNEIDER, Associated Press 1 day ago

OAKLAND, Fla. — Typical of their hot summer days free from school, 11-year-old Jeremiah Grimes and 10-year-old Isiah Francis were plopped on the couch watching YouTube and playing video games, but Tuesday they smelled something unusual.

When they looked out the window, they saw smoke streaming from the home next door.

As Jeremiah put on his shoes, Isiah ran next door, where he encountered the neighbor frantically searching for water to douse the flames. The man told him two young children were in the kitchen.

Isiah went inside and, with Jeremiah's guidance, plucked the 1-year-old and 8-month-old from the burning home.

"It was really smoky," Isiah said. "I could kind of see, but I had to use my sense of touch."

Two other children in the home were rescued by firefighters who arrived moments later, after Jeremiah called 911.

"They did something that a grown man would think twice about doing," said Jeremiah's mother, Stef Laboy. "They obviously didn't think twice about it. They were very heroic."

Heroism had little to do with it — instinct kicked in, Jeremiah said. Both boys had been trained at school to call 911 in the event of a fire.

"I was just doing it," Jeremiah said. "Basic instinct took over."

Kat Kennedy, a spokeswoman for Orange County Fire Rescue, said Wednesday that "one or two young boys called 911 and went into the burning home and saved those two children." An official incident report hadn't yet been released.

The boys' accounts veer slightly in their separate retellings.

Isiah said Jeremiah was telling him which way to go from the door of the home since he could see better outside the intensity of the smoke. Isiah said he scooped up the toddler and infant, who were sitting on the floor, and he gave the infant to Jeremiah. They then ran to Isiah's house down the lane.

Under Jeremiah's telling, Isiah went in first and he followed, but they both went into the kitchen to rescue the children, who were uninjured.

The two children rescued at short time later by firefighters were in critical but stable condition at Arnold Palmer Hospital.

The cause of the blaze hasn't been determined. Yellow police tape surrounded the burned-out home on Wednesday.

"I just wanted to help those kids," Isiah said.

Heroic officer sings lullaby to little girl after her father dies in car crash

    http://www.today.com/parents/heroic-...er-dies-t27926

Instead of enjoying Father's Day with his daughter, Nick Struck spent the day thinking about the little girl he held in his arms, moments after she lost her dad in a car accident.

The Brighton, Colorado, police officer was called into action Thursday when he arrived at the scene of a car accident, which left one man dead and a woman and four children injured.
One of the children, a hysterical 2-year-old girl, was handed off to Struck by another first-responder in hopes of calming her down.

"My first thought was that this could've been my daughter, who is also 2 years old," Officer Struck told TODAY.com.

So he handled the situation accordingly.

"Whenever my daughter falls down or gets hurt, I scoop her up and start singing 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star' and by the time we get to 'up above,' she stops crying and starts singing along," Struck said.
Sure enough, it worked. The two began walking away from the scene, but were still in sight enough for a witness to capture this photo of him pointing to the flashing lights on the emergency vehicle, which happened to match the rhythm of the lullaby. The girl stroked the back of his arm as he sang — something his daughter does as well.

Struck is grateful that witness Jessica Matrious, who watched the car blow a tire and lose control, was able to capture the heart-wrenching moment.

"It's a rare glimpse and a good opportunity for people to see that this actually happens all over the country on a daily basis; it just doesn't always get caught on camera," Struck said.

After the ground ambulance arrived and the little girl was taken to the hospital to receive care, Struck's attention turned to determining the cause of the accident, which is still under investigation.
He told his wife he wanted to have a simple Father's Day, which also happened to be his 31st birthday.

"It's never a good time for this, but to happen on Father's Day weekend was just horrible," Struck said. "For me, the day was all about spending time with my daughter and being able to hold her."
Struck will be thinking about the little girl, who is now fatherless, as his own daughter reaches milestones, like going off to school for the first time or learning how to ride a bike.

"That moment will definitely affect me for the rest of my life," Struck said. "Every girl needs her dad, but I'm happy I was able to be there to help get her through that emotional day."
