Home Health Nurse?
My mom is in a nursing home right now, but her insurance will only cover her for 60 days there. The nursing home suggested we try signing her up for Medicaid. The only trouble with that is that Mom and Dad have a little money put away and that Medicaid would take all that before covering Mom's nursing home bill, leaving Dad with almost nothing. What we're wondering is who we could contact to find out about getting a nurse to come in and help Mom at home a few days a week if we'd take her out of the nursing home and take her home. I'm not sure if her insurance would cover a nurse, but it has to be cheaper than a nursing home. We'd appreciate any help or suggestions.

We had a home health aid come in to help my mom for a few months. Her family doctor set everything up. I would suggest you start there. She didn't have to pay anything for this help.

Your Mom probably went through Medicare for that. I just found out some other info that might help. If your Mom or Dad ever served in the Military even if they didn't retire from the military they are entitled to $ 13,000.00 per year in Home Health Care from the military. My BFF found this out when trying to get a home health nurse at home to help her Mom after her Medicare runs out. The lady that runs the home health care center told her about this.
As for Medicare they would have to leave some of the money for your Dad. I would call the 800# for Medicare and ask them.

I'm not sure if Medicare would pay or not. What we were told to try is Medicaid, federally funded money for health care, but you have to qualify financially.

Sunnie is right the best place to start is with her family doctor. Just be careful because a guy I know they wanted him to sign his house over to them for Medicaid to pay to take care of his wife. Don't let them talk your mom and dad into doing anything before you know what the long term ramifications are. I'm sorry your mom isn't doing well.

Sorry I assumed your parents were above age 65 when mentioning Medicare. I don't think you can get Medicaid if you have private insurance.

Yes my Mom's expenses were paid through Medicare but we first had to have her doctor approve of the care.
While my Mom had great people looking after her I always made sure either I or one of my sons were present when home health was there.

I know some older people that they come to their house and cook and clean and take care of them so many hours a day and medicaare paid for it. I would call medicare and ask them. They'll tell you if they will cover it or not. It doesn't hurt to ask. But definitely get her doctor to request it for her.

If your parents have any thing of value, like a home or any savings... you need to get ahold of an attorney and fast. there is a "look back" period where the state can take funding to repay for medicaid. If you have a good attorney you can avoid losing everything. Good luck and I hope your Mom is okay. I think if your Mom has to be in the nursing home longer then the insurance will automatically make her sign up for medicaid. either way, get someone to help you financially.

The look back period is 5 years. There isn't an attorney that can change this. You can change your will/trust as many times as you want but the 5 year period changes every time you make a change.
I just went through this in June & my cousin is going through it now with my aunt. Anytime you have to go through medicare you have to first go through your doctor. Medicare gives you 30 days to see your doctor. You can receive the services prior to seeing your doctor but your doctor still needs to order anything.
I went on vacation & when I got home I thought Mom had had a stroke. She didn't know if it was day or night, couldn't remember names & was basically babbling. I called her doctor who ordered a CT scan, bloodwork & home health to visit. She had to see the doctor within 30 days.
Good luck. I know what you are going through.
