This must be done in your head only.
Do NOT use paper and pencil or a calculator.
Take 1000 and add 40 to it.. Now add another 1000. Now add 30.
Add another 1000. Now add 20. Now add another 1000
Now add 10. What is the total?

1000+40=1040
1040+1000=2040
2040+30=2070
2070+1000=3070
3070+20=3090
3090+1000=4090

well I got 5000 first try and then the 4100..but everyone I have quizzed got 5000 first try too...lol

no when you add the 40.30,20,10 you get 100 ,people add it up to be a 1000 because they were adding in their head..so when you were at 4090..you jump to 5000 when adding in the last 10

That won't happen if you add the 1000s first then the smaller numbers. You get 4000 then you get 100 then you think 4100. TaDa.
