A gift card can still be a "thoughtful gift"... I love a book store card... my DH an art store card. I was given a very expensive purse from an Italian designer ... I would have rathered a $20 GC to IHOP. I shop all year as well... GC's are usually my "last minute" option if I haven't found the "right" item.

I LOVE getting gift cards. If it is to Wal-Mart or Meijer, I use it for groceries. Gas cards? Bring 'em on...ds commutes 60+ miles to/from college each day. Fast food? Great! I don't have to cook! Gift cards from anywhere else? I'll find something to use it on, either for myself or my family.

I personally prefer getting and giving gift cards. I have a Brother that is forbidden from buying anyone anything other than a gift card as we are all tired of taking the junk back that he buys to get something that is actually useful or wanted.
Can't remove going bankrupt.

This year my daughter came up from downstate and I took her shopping. I NEVER get to do that as we only see one another maybe 3 times a year and the visit is always short and busy, but this year we took my granddaughter shopping and I was able to get her something SHE picked out. I usually don't buy for my kids for b'days or Christmas as we just don't have the money (we buy for my granddaughters!) but I splurged & used my CC. I was so pleased to see that they were pleased with their gifts. But, me? GC, please.

Same here. THat way I can get what I want, or let the other person get what they want.
I never make it the ONLY gift I give though. I always give something else along with it.

Such a nice memory. I used to shop with my grandmother on rare occassions. We would even go to lunch as well. I also shopped with my Mom......I miss those days, they are gone.
Enjoy them Baragabrat. They'll remember and smile. It's not what you bought them, but the time spent together and the interraction. The items are just the little reminders.

Oh, I agree! They might be moving out of state soon so it was an extra special time (looking back, because I didn't know until this past weekend.)

I don't accept Christmas presents not do I give Christmas presents except for the senior daycare center in our town. I usually buy them something for the center like a DVD player or whatnot but last year I bought them a gc for the local video store. I think I'm doing the same for them this year.

Why don't you "do" gifts for Christmas ?
