turkey roasting advice!
So Dh volunteered me to cook Thanksgiving dinner this year!! I have never cooked a turkey so I thought I would practice tonight. I got a 12.5 lb turkey and the roasting bag thing. It is all ready to go in the oven however if I start it now it will be done about 2 hrs before we eat, is that ok ? will it dry out if it sits uncarved that long? Any other advice for the virgin turkey cooker would great!!!! TIA

I never used the bag thing. I have always rubbed buttered on my turkeys and added salt and peppered on top. Cover with foil and let bake the suggested amount on the bag. I also rebast (sp?) half way through cooking. I did recently let mine sit in the oven for a few hours after I shut it off til dinner time and it was still moist when it was dinner time.

I always cook mine in the bag... and I can tell you that my husband liked it so much one year that he literally ate the entire thing over the course of the day... he didn't eat anything else... but he ate turkey til you could see it in his eyeballs.

If this is your first turkey, be sure to take out the guts before cooking.
I've often heard of brining the turkey and that it was outrageous. I've never tried it myself, but perhaps this year I might. I found this interesting 5 star recipe.

I use the bags all of the time. So how did it turn out?

I just had turkey lastnight at my daughter's house. The biggest thing with turkey is that it does dry out quickly. You want to plan on it being done about a half hour at the most before you plan on eating. We usually let it sit out for about 20 minutes for the juices to settle before we carve it and it always ends up being super moist. I have never used a cooking bag though. My daughter put all kinds of rub on the outside of the turkey and it was very yummy!
How did it turn out????
