I thought fluorescent lights were supposed to last longer.
We replaced all of our old light bulbs with newer supposedly more efficient fluorescent light bulbs about 6 months ago, and just yesterday my dad's lamp's bulb went kaput. I just got up to get some water and the light that we keep on over our kitchen sink is flickering on and off.
Is this normal for fluorescent lights? I thought one of the upsides to switching was that they were supposed to have a much longer life-span. I'm pretty sure some of our old bulbs lasted a lot longer than these have.

I switched all mine over, about a year ago. But I have one in my living room that's lasted well over 4 yrs. (And it gets used nightly...it's on a timer).
Maybe you just got a bad one, or there's something wrong with the light/lamp.

That's what the guberment wanted the consumer to believe. They forced fed this down our throats only they didn't make the makers of these products live up to their end. You can buy some that will last and some that don't. Aren't you glad the guberment is taking our choices away from us to make?

I actually like these better than the older ones. They don't give off as much heat, and the brightness isn't as harsh.
Gov't or not, I was going to buy them anyhow. lol

If you buy cheaper lamps they will be just like buying cheaper incandescent lamps. I have had the same florescent lamps in my bathroom for about 5 years and they get used every day. I have also had them in my dining room fixture for a couple of years since it is such a pain to change them.

Those lights do last very long, years, the problem is most likely in your wiring. I know that from experience, you must have a short somewhere that won't show up even with an electrition. (Like a squirell chewed the wire.) The bigger problem is when they do stop working figuring out HOW TO get rid of the old bulbs. Can't just be thrown in the trash.
BUT the good thing is, we still have the choice of which type of bulb to buy, and to continue to buy, cuz the gov't found it unconstitionual to be forced to buy those type of bulbs only, just like low flush toilets (cost more).

I was totally against the new light bulbs for a looong time, I finally got some because our electric company was selling them for a $1 each. I am surprised, I love them. I am only using 19watts, for a 75 watt light bulb. I am a bright light bulb user, I liked having 100 watts (old style) bulbs. But these new ones are very bright, and give off a clean white light, it's very nice.
Replacing 12 bulbs in my house at 100 watts of usage each, which is 1,200 watts of energy, now with the new ones, at only 19 watts each~~ I am only using 228 watts of energy for the 12 bulbs. I am thrilled, and I have only had them for a month. Also, I am sure that it is much easier on my light fixtures using less wattage.

I like the instant on of the incandescents. Fluorescent just isn't the same. They are also not dimmable, really dimmable.

OH YES, I was minding my own business one day surfing the TV, cuz Time Warner changed it channel line up, and I stopped on CSPAN and a governor or senator was talking about the florencent vs incandescents, and said because of being forced (he also used the low flow/flush toilets as an example) that its unconstitional, and disposing of them with the mercury in them toxic, etc. (wasn't there a blah blah blah smilie?)
BUT I have not seen Sylvania or GE, just 'off' brands.
