How do you get a dog to quit chewing shoes?

We are going to look at a dog today for my son, he is the cutest thing. My son's been wanting one for a while.
His name is boomer, he is neutered, house broke, crate trained and up to date on his shots, the only down fall she says is he LOVES shoes.

    Any suggestions?

He is a mix of bassett, and yellow lab

Put the shoes in a closet?

We give our dogs the Kong toys that you can put the treats in. They love them and they have never chewed on anything but their toys

One theory behind the gods chewing on shoes is that it has an intense smell of the owner... in which case, putting them away is the best way

Keep the shoes picked up, and give the dog plenty of raw hides to chew. Chewing is a natural act for dogs, and they need something to chew. Just give them the right things, and keep temptation out of their way. Plus, it's good to keep your shoes picked up. lol

yeah, tell my three kids that LOL

Actually all of us, we have the habit of kicking them off and they go behind the recliner in the living room.

Well, we got the dog. He is 8 months old. Cutest thing, I took him for a walk around our yard to try to get him familiar, I guess almost 2 acres of it is mowed, when we got in he plopped down on the floor (air condition) and fell asleep. We got him in town, so the first thing he did when he saw the neighbors horse was growl and bark He is a really good dog though, so far... I've got a dog house I'm going to drag out for outside. Over in the shadey part of the yard I am going to put up a dog runner on the clothes line and put the dog house, he will be there when we are gone during the day, untill he gets familiar with his home and surroundings. I believe he will be inside for the most part.
I told the kids to not leave food around, or walk away from it to go do something..

I got a large hamper style basket at a yardsale - that is where we toss the shoes. Being in the South - summers are barefoot weather !!

My cousin has a basset... I *hate* that dog, he howls ALL. THE. TIME. and he chews on *every thing*... he has even taken to chewing the corners of the kitchen cabinets. That being said, he's the only one of that breed I've ever seen that out of control, one of my neighbors has three and they are the sweetest little (well big) things. I really think keeping the shoes put up is pretty much gonna be the only fix... and maybe giving him shoes when you are ready to throw them out? I don't know... I buy my dogs toys like crazy... it's obscene and my husband gets annoyed, but atleast they stay busy!

No, do not give him "old shoes" or any other "old" clothing/items....they can't tell the difference and will look for a similar item with that scent. (That was advice from my vet.)

Just give them plenty of dog toys and lots of praise when they chew their own items. If you catch them with something of yours, a stern "No", take it away and then give them their toy and a praise.

    Good luck & congrats!!!

Ok here is the Not Politically Correct answer - shock collar - everytime he gets a shoe you give him a shock - it works.

Since he is under 2 years old, then he is still a puppy...and puppies chew things. Dogs are puppies for the first two years of their life and you should expect puppy behavior! All the hints people have mentioned can help. The primary thing is that behavior has to be consistent and things need to be put away. It's a matter of retraining the human behavior as well.

Our dog had a passion for picture frames...particularly the little stands that help the frames stand up. He would just chew those things off. I finally started sprinkling our table tops with cayenne pepper which worked perfectly...until our cleaning crew dusted. So, every time they would leave...I would just have to sprinkle more cayenne pepper around. I know they must have wondered about all this 'red' dust we had covering every service. BUT IT WORKED!!!

I'm not sure that you could do it with shoes though. Good luck!
Never argue with an idiot. It will bring you down to his level and he’ll win because of experience.
