slance, I have been looking at shock collars, but just for our yard and possible training with not barking and spooking our neighbors horse, and it would be nice to let him run the yard without getting out and having him on a walking collar. He's only outside when we are right now, he is learning the yard and his territory and would be nice to be able to let him run, but kind of give him that jolt with a collar when he reaches the end that is not fenced so he doesn't run out, untill, hopefully maybe eventually, he might learn to stay in the yard. Probably not LOL.
They have ones that are suppose to be the most humane, I think petsmart or petsafe ones. I am thinking about it though.
And yes pepperpot, I was walking down the dog isle at walmart looking for a chew something for him, and saw all the toys and stuffed animals, and I thought... "are you crazy" !!!!, that looks just like a regular toy or stuffed animal, that dog will never know the difference between a chew toy and a real toy. So I stuck with doggie chew bones.

But stick to heavy duty plastic toys, stay away from toys made of cloth, like rope toys, etc...
Keep the dog active, take him for lots of walks & try and burn as much energy out of him as you can.
Raising a puppy is hard work, I would never want to do it again.

Here is the collar I was looking at. They have some up for bids on ebay that are going alot cheaper, they also have them in different ranges. This one is for 400 yards, and is for a small dog.

I also want to look into a crate, since he is crate trained for when I am not here. A collapsable one that I can fold up and maybe hide behind the couch or something when not in use. I don't have space for a big one to sit around since I don't have a garage or anything.

When we bought Hot Toddie 9 years ago (Toy Pom) he was only around 6 months old. He'd chew shoes, furniture legs anything he could get his paws on. When taking him to the vet she told me to spray vinegar on things he was chewing and if that didn't work put a little pepper in it. Within about a week chewing stopped and has never happened again. Good luck. Congrats. on your new family member.

From what I have learned about crate training is that the crate is their "safe spot" and they will go there if they feel unsafe. So I would try to find a place for the crate to reside. I have a friend that uses one as a end table - you would not know it is the dogs crate since she has a piece of cloth that covers the side you can see - the dog goes around behind the furniture to get into his crate. He loves it there. Funny part is he has learned that he can scare the crap out of people that don't know it is his "home". They will sit next to it and then he goes in it and starts barking or growling and it freaks them out.
