Fleas this season
Are many of you having trouble with fleas this season? I know I've talked to a lot of people who are having a hard time even using the anti flea products. My sister's dog has had the internal medicine and the external kind and she is still having a terrible time with fleas. Her dog does have longish fur. We have a min pin and he hasn't had any fleas that I have seen. Also he hasn't been doing any scratching. He sleeps with us so I would notice for sure.

I would never let a dog who has been outside a lot sleep with me. The thought of it gives me shivers.

When I have had flea problems in the past this is what I did to get rid of them. 1) Take dog to vet for a bath (let them stay there all day) and apply Frontline or Advantage before bringing home. 2) After dropping dog off at vet I would set off flea bombs in the house. 3) Mix 1 tablespoon of flea shampoo into 1 gallon of water in my yard sprayer and spray the entire yard. That way when they go outside they don't bring fleas back in the house. It worked really well on all of my dogs and I have had long and short haired dogs and a semi long haired cat and no fleas.

It wouldn't bother me if he was out a lot but we have to be careful with him because min pins can't tolerate extremes of temp. In the spring and fall he likes to lay on the deck, but if it is hot or cold, he runs out, does his business and comes back in while we stand at the door. He will keep looking at the door to be sure we are waiting. His fur is so short we can check him in just a matter of minutes for fleas or ticks. And he is a small dog too.

no flea problems, just stupid ants.
I was out in the building the other day cleaning and looking for fall/winter clothes to drag out for the kids, and moved some boxes and what looked to be like a dark ground covering started moving.. it was a huge blanket of ants, it was UNREAL !!! OMG I freaked...... and under them were like white blotches of eggs/egg sacs.
They started crawling up me, it was horrible.
I ran and got some spray, came back and started spraying away and stomping them.

That part sounds like my former English Springer Spaniel. She would run back to the door and come inside if her "people" were not waiting for her at the door. Best part was she would never run out of the yard since her "people" were not there.

I lost two of my sweet kitties last summer due to flea anemia. They went outside in my courtyard only occasionally & were being treated monthly with Advantage, but by the time I noticed any symptoms & brought them to the vet it was too late to save them. They both died in my arms only days apart, it was so sad. I'd never heard of flea anemia (the vet said that he didn't find fleas on them, only found flea feces, so I still don't really understand how it happened); but I'd recommend to anyone who has a pet to bring them to the vet at the first sign of any abnormal behavior - lethargy, sleeping or hanging around in unusual places, etc. I thought the Advantage would keep them covered, but apparently not ... I wouldn't wish that heartache on anyone else.

I too have had a difficult time this year with fleas including dog treatments, yard treatments etc, etc... but I did find that this year using Vo5 shampoo works better at killing the live fleas on my dogs than the flea shampoos.

yikes, I don't think I will be using vo5 if it is so strong that it kills fleas.

My dogs have never had fleas....ever. Had a cat years ago with them once. They are not prevalent in my area. I also never treat for them.

I didn't have a problem all season long, but recently I've noticed the cats scratching. Last year was a really bad year here, they were really bad, but it was so wet here until recently that they didn't seem to be as bad.
