    Guinea Pig, so sad...

I went to a local pet store and I saw such a sad incident with the guinea pig. One of them was being picked on, and you could see the scars and scabs that have formed. I mean the back half of its body is all scared up and hardly has any hair on it because it has gotten so many scars. I was so close to buying the little guy but I already have two dogs, a turtle, and a guinea pig. What can i do? What are my options? It's so heartbreaking to see something like that, and the pet store doesn't seem to care.

The store left the guinea pig in the cage with the others still picking on him? (They didn't separate him?)
Very sad, to say the least. How about we gang up and go pick on that store manager.

Call and complain to the manager of the store, or better yet, go back to the store, make a scene and ask why they arn't being separated. Go back a couple times a week to the store to make sure they did separate them, and if they didn't, continue to make a scene and continue to call and speak with the manager untill they do.
But of course, that's just the b!tch side of me LOL.
You could even get a hold of some kind of animal control place, or even the news, and say you think an animal was being abused at this particular store.

I think guinea pigs will eat each other if they are too crowded, and for other reasons too. I can't say this for positive but we used to have some little animal like a guinea pig, or gerbil that did this. Even the mom would eat her babies. It was horrible. And they multiplied at a phenomenal rate. I don't think the pet stores care about a lot of these things that are abuse. That's not true for all pet stores, but for the chain ones it seems to be more true.

This was not a chain store, and I said something to one of the associates, but they didn't care much. It's just so sad seeing that. Poor fella, hope someone gets him. Like many of you said, you would think the one being picked on would be separated, but nope, he's still in it.

Call Animal Control that is just animal abuse no matter what type of animal it is. Those people should know better than to allow an animal to get into such a bad condition and still try to SELL the animal. Time to put the owners in a cage and let the guinea pig go free.

    Unhappy

Did you actually see him being attacked?I'm asking because we once had a single guinea pig that looked like that,He was scratching himself like crazy. After rushing him to the vet we found out he had mange(I assume he got it from the fresh hay we were feeding him).
If this is the case at that place, all the little guys are going to die without expensive medical attention.I agree about calling animal control, things may be way more severe than one piggie getting picked on.

I am for sure it's not mange, if it was, it would of spread to the other guinea pigs already. It is being abuse, I will call animal control and see what they do. Thanks for all the advice.

I wouldn't say ANYTHING to the store. I would get up in the morning and call the ppl in your town who are responsible for rescuing animals. If you throw a fit in the store they'll probably separate them and then animal control won't have a reason to take it.

BTW, there are two types of mange. One is contagious to other animals and humans... one is NOT... so it is quite possible for him to have come in already infected... if guinea pigs can even get mange... I've never actually heard of them getting it.

I looked it up and they can get it... http://www.guinealynx.info/mites.html
