What do you think of sewing/homemade clothes?

When I was a child , my mom made all of her clothes, my sister's clothes, and my clothes. She even made bluejeans for Daddy because she didn't like the way any of the bought ones fit him. There wasn't anything she couldn't make. Many of the things she made I loved, there was one coat I especially loved. But, there were times, especially in highschool, that I felt I was in homemade clothes which wasn't good. Oh she even made my beautiful wedding gown. By that time, I appreciated her sewing again. I also sewed my children's clothes until I went back to college and on to be a nurse. Both of my girls sewed some of their highschool clothes because they wanted to and liked the compliments they got. Home sewing has gone through several stages of acceptance, from being preferred because the fit can be so perfect to being undesirable. What level of acceptance it is in now , I don't know?
Sewing also used to be a great way to save money. I don't know that it is anymore. But it is a wonderful way to be creative and to have something different from anyone else.

I always wished that I could sew but I am all thumbs. My dad would sew my doll clothes when I was little. My mom did sew me a few outfits in high school. They were skirts and vests to match. I don't think many people sew their own clothes anymore but I could be wrong.

I like to sew and I have a pretty nice machine... but I haven't much graduated beyond pillows and throws.

My stepmother made me the cutest skorts my freshman year of high school. I wore them until they fell apart. Loved them and I really didn't care if anyone knew they were home made, although, I don't really remember anyone asking.

I make all our SCA garb. And my skirts, and most of my scrubs.
I am happier with the fit that way.

I make our curtains, and anything else I can sew together. I like to find that color or style of fabric that noone else has, and make something with it

I crotchet too, and I am about to start needlepoint

Bug, that is so impressive that your mom did all that, especially the jeans! I am not good at sewing, but I love baby clothes that are handmade. They are so gorgeous.

I had a sewing business for awhile. I would sew just about anything. I had one customer and she would bring me most of the clothes she bought to be altered---she was short. She knew the governors wife so I ended up sewing her inaugural gown.

That was exciting but anymore I can't look at a sewing machine. LOL Of course, all my clothes never got worked on. I didn't want to sew my things after sewing all day. I need to alter some things right now and can't get into it.

My mother sewed most if not all my clothes while I was in elementary and jr. high. Wearing braces (legs) it was hard to find pants and shorts to go over my braces.

I really liked all the clothes my mother sewed. She also made all of her clothes too. Whatever she made for herself I had a "mini me" version. We didn't wear them on the same days though or when going out.

Of course back in the 70's a lot of girls I knew their mother's made their clothes. Mine mostly consisted of those jumpers that you wore w/a blouse underneath. Mom usually made shorts or pants to go w/them so I had 2 outfits in one.

Funny story....when I took swimming lessons in the 2nd grade my mother decided to make my bathing suit. She came home w/the material. I had swimming lessons the very next day. Immediately after getting into the pool I sunk to the bottom.....mom was terrified. Come to find out she'd made my new pink/yellow bathing suit out of 2 bath towels.....The one and only time my mother tried to kill me, literally. It was the biggest joke in our family for years....about Melanie almost drowning in a terry cloth bathing suit. Needless to say after that mom was very careful about the material she chose.

BTW-the suit made out of bath towels was really pretty pink w/yellow and blue flowers. I wore it that summer as a play suit. At least mom got some use out of the drowning suit....lol. Mom was never so happy to see me grow out of something....lol.

I have a sewing machine, and was taught to sew at a young age. Haven't used it for awhile . I'm thinking about though. I really don't like any of the patterns or styles of clothes out there anymore. And it's so hard to find anything that fits.

I have been planning for awhile to make curtains for my living room. Again, I can't find anything I like in the stores, so I'm on a hunt for some decent looking material.

I don't sew, but my Mom does. I would like to learn. I have a friend who buys her kids clothes and then pays to have them embellished (I guess is the word). She will have things sewn on, trimmings and other stuff. The kids always look amazingly cute in their one of a kind outfits!
