I don't know anything about propane... it's an all electric house... but I do know in my area elec companies do not have to ask permission to raise rates any more... it sucks... they just do it whenever they feel like it... and now they've started putting in those "smart meters" everywhere and ppls bills are more than tripling in some cases... it's crazy!

I can't remember exactly everything but it was $92 disconnect charge, $92 pumping out charge and some other charge. I do call around and Amerigas usually is less but other companies don't really like giving out the information and they give you a "new customer" rate. Besides the price per gallon we have to pay a hazardous material transport fee and taxes. We keep the theristat at 65 during the day and at 10:00 p.m. it goes down to 62 degrees. I wear a t-shirt, sweatshirt and usually a fleese jacket and two pairs of socks. I just wish the warmer weather would hurry up and get here. When we first started getting propane in 2002 it was $0.89 a gallon. Also until recently our electricity was cheap but I heard that they have been allowed four rate increases this year. So even if we switched to electric heat it probably wouldn't help. Oh, well. That's the way it goes.
I don't think think they legally can charge a disconnect fee? Or any other fees for you to quit them. You would have had to sign a contract stating all of that. Heck here most companies charge like $1-15 per year to have their tank. They just want your business and you have to book them
only. I know because I have called around looking for a tiny tank for our garage to be on a seperate one.

They are unregulated and they can charge you what ever they want. They charge a disconnect fee since they have to come out and disconnect the tank from your house and remove it from the property. It also depends on the area you live in as to what fees they charge and how much they charge for propane.

you can switch companies, I had Amerigas and they were awful, called a different company, they came out, took the tanks and put them in the driveway for Amerigas to pick up and installed their own tanks
I think we are paying 2.39

We had Amerigas but they were jerks about everything, told them to come take their tank and had Holtzman put one in. Southern States is usually cheaper than Amerigas, and friendlier, atleast around here. Were paying $2.89/gallon now, hopefully it will go down soon, we use propane for heat, cooking and hotwater, at this point I think all electric would be cheaper!
