I make a "Hamburger Pie" and a Tater Tot Casserole both using ground beef.

My hamburger pie is lean ground beef fried with onion, garlic and seasonings. I add 2 cans tomato sauce and 1 can of green beans to the cooked mixture and put it in the bottom of a 9x13 pan and top with real mashed potoatos dotted with butter. I don't put cheese in this one...only in the tater tot one.

Linda as for quantity of potatos it doesn't matter really, it can be thick or thin. I have never put it on the bottom.

I do want to try some of these variations but I ate a lot of hamburger pie growing up because its easy and cheap with just burger, green beans, tomato sauce and spuds.

Mom always made Poppers Pizza too . Its a pizza with bean and bacon soup and hot dogs! Its actually great! LOL

What quantity of mashed potatoes (9x13 pan) and do you prepare them as you were going to eat them?
Is there an advantage to putting them both on the top and bottom?

Those that use gravy....do you mix the gravy in with the meat?
For the veggies; is canned the best or is frozen OK too?

    thanks
Yes, I mix the gravy in with the meat. As far as how many potatoes I just put on what looks to be the right amount. You don't want a real thin layer on top though. I have never put them on the bottom so can't help with that question. I would think as far as veggies, canned would be best unless you would precook the frozen ones. But someone else might be able to answer that better than I. I don't put veggies in mine.

When I make it with hamburger, I usually add cream of mushroom soup and milk to the hamburger. But when I make it, I usually use skinless, boneless chicken breasts. I chop them up and mix it with some chicken gravy, put it in the bottom of the pan, pour a couple cans of corn in (drained) and spread mashed potatoes on top of all that. Sometimes I'll put cheese on top of it all, but my family will eat it either way. This is something even my youngest will eat and he is the pickiest eater I've ever seen!!

I make mine very very bland. I don't add spices or anything to mine. Just hamburger, corn, and potatoes. Oh and a bit of salt. I have always made it like that and I love it. I know really boring lol. All of that stuff you guys put in sounds good but I think I will stick to my boring recipe

I brown and drain the meat, add gravy, seasonings (salt, pepper, garlic and onion powders and whatever herbs I feel like throwing in), and peas and carrots (I use frozen). Dump in a casserole and then top with mashed potatoes (if I'm not using leftovers, I make them less buttery).

I haven't made it in a while, and this reminds me that I should

I love it, and its so cheap and easy to make that I used to make it often. But everyone else got sick of it, so I haven't made it in a while. I make is a little different than you, but same difference.

Another good way 2 make it is make some real mashed...cook & drain the hamburger meat. Mix ham. meat w/baked beans (maple & brown sugar lrg can) & family size can of tomato soup...Spread out in casserole dish then put the mashed potatoes on top..Bake @ 350 until mashed potatoes r firm & toasty.

Another very quick & easy recipe is..make family size box of mac & cheese...Put back in pan & then mix in family size can of tomato soup (prepared like you would normally make it.) Done when it's hot enough 4u
My kids call & mac & cheese soup...They ♥ it.
