flea treatment for dogs?
We bought frontline. It worked just a little while, but not long. It's been 3 weeks, so about time for new treatment. Should we stick with frontline, or is there something better? I've put granuales in the yard, but apparently it did no good. I've used all kinds of stuff in the yard, but can't beat them. But anyways, what is a good treatment for the dog?

Are your dogs inside or outdoors or a combination of both? There is a homeopathic way to get rid of fleas, tho it does involve granuals being put out in the yard.
Get REAL lye soap, no additives preservatives or colors or scents, scents might irritate your dogs skin. Take off their collars and put it in the bath water, then use the lye soap to scrub everywhere on the dog except the eyes and inside the ears ((of course, duh)) Lye soap stinks, but it will kill the fleas. You will have to repeat every week to assure that the new fleas/eggs die.
IF you chose to use advantix or anything, do not bath the dog three days before or three days after, or it will wash it off.
Lay out the granduals in the yard. A combination of the or the 3 will work. Also, get some brewers yeast, which helps with preventing fle and ticks

You can also use Orange Peels this works great. Take a orange peels and put them in a blender with a little water to make a paste then after you give your dog a bath rub it all over the body leave it on for 10-15 mins and rinse. You have to do this every month though. Trust me it works. Good luck
Handle every stressful situation like a dog.
Piss on it and walk away.

I prefer Advantix over Frontline. Also, when applying the preventative, be sure that you part the hair where you can see the skin. Apply it on the skin. These products work through the oil in the pets skin and if all you do is get it on the hair then it isn't going to work too well. I know a lot of my customers didn't realize this and were applying it wrong.
Like the other poster said, preferrably apply 2-3 days after a bath and wait a few days after application to give a bath. The bath washes out the oils in the skin, so if you bath too soon either way you are basically wasting the product.

I used to use Revolution but my vet stopped carrying it. says it didn't work for some dogs. I loved it, never had a problem and now I can't seem to find anything that works either.

I love Frontline plus!! We used to have fleas terrible on ours dogs years ago till we started using it. Plus you can get it cheaper if you buy the larger ones and get a syringe and measure it out the wieght you are supposed to give your dog/cat. Say you buy the biggest they carry. 89-120lbs. But you only need the 10-25 lbs. Dump one of those into a sealable vial and then suck into a syringe the amount you need. For use we need the small dog (.67) Which we usually don't give them quite that much because it looks like alot. So this way when you buy it you spend say about $8 more for the large dog amount. But its last you like 9 times longer.
Just remember MOST of these only keep ticks off for two weeks. Fleas for the month.

both my dogs are allergic to fleas, I found this out when I took my dogs to my sisters house who had fleas bad(I did not know this at the time) and we brought them home with us...my dogs lost a lot of hair, I really didnt know what was going on so I took them to the vet and one look she told me they were allergic to fleas and put frontline on them right away and told me to use it on both dogs once a month....I freaked out thinking my house was invested, which it was at the time, but after a couple of weeks of using the frontline we had no more fleas what so ever.....so I would just recommend that you start using the frontline once a month instead of every 3 months.......I told my sister about it and she ran and got her dogs frontline and all her flea problems went away as well.

IN my house, I'm the one allergic to fleas !! LOL! We can't have 'em at all... and we've always had dogs.
We have always used Advantage, from Bayer. It's worked perfectly on our big dogs (all our dogs have been around 90 pounds). Advantix is for fleas and ticks, we would use it if we needed tick protection, but, we don't.
Advantage is expensive from the vet, but, you can buy it online for less than half the vet price... in fact, I just got our dogs Advantage and heartworm prevention meds a few days ago.
With everything included, the Advantage and the shipping (it's $3.99 no matter how big your order), we pay about $7.00 per tube, it's $15.00 at the vet. You will pay a little less if your dog is smaller. I buy it at Pet Supplies Net
It's safe, my whole family uses it. In fact, my sisters 'rat terrier' is all of 12 pounds, one of my dogs tubes lasts her four months ! She uses a dropper and gets four doses out of one big tube.

Capstar works wonders for fleas. It works faster than Frontline PLus in killing fleas,Capstar takes minutes, FL+ up to 18 hours. Advantix stops the flea from biting in minutes, but takes hours to kill. Frontline Top Spot is not as reliable as Frontline Plus. With Advantix,it is recommended to apply the topical in 4 spots, starting at the shoulder blades and down toward the end of the back,in dogs over 21 lbs. When we have clients that say Advantix doesn't work on their dog, that is usually the reason, they are not spacing the topical. We use Frontline Spray for Flea Allergy Dermatitis and for severe infestations. For fleas in the home and outside we recommend an insect development inhibitor, like lufenuron.
A dog is not almost human , I know of no greater insult to a canine than to describe it as such.

Thanks Char, that site is cheaper than petshed.com where I used to buy from. 89 dollars for my 2 dogs (med and large) 6 month supply of Advantage.
Petshed would have been 124. yikes

Great !
I used to buy from Pet Shed too, and switched because, well, Pet Supplies Net was cheaper. I've been with them for 8 or 9 years now, and, I have never been disappointed.
