After you cut about a half inch from the bottom of the stem, kinda smash it (the bottom of the stem). Just hit it with something... that allows it to take on more water, 'cause when you trim it, it creates an air-lock kinda thing, where it can't take up water... and if you can, cut it under water, like in a bowl or something.
