    Absence from school?

Who determines school policy as far as absenteesm? My 4 yr old and 6 yr old start tomorrow. They can be absent 5 days each semester? FIVE DAYS Now they can be absent more with a dr's excuse. I think when children are sick they should stay home so they don't give what ever they have to every other child in the class. And I also think a 4 yr old ought to get to stay home if he just gets up in a bad mood or crying that day. My goodness home schoolers don't have to be signed up until age 7. But anyway we have rules to follow. It wasn't this strict last year and I know the 6 yr old, then 5, missed more days last yr. They were allowed 10 days a semester last yr.
It will be expensive to run to the dr for an excuse everytime one of them is out sick with diarrhea or vomiting. My granddaughter had pink eye last yr and they can go with that even though her eye hurt. The hand book says the truancy officer will be contacted if the absentes go above this. Of course no one asked me my idea about any of this. Who decides this policy? Is it school district? state or Fed govt that determines how many days the children must attend? Are the rules of your school similar?

I think ours was you only could miss 2 days per semester or a little more then that with a drs note if you missed more then that you had to take some kinda test at the end of the year(which meant you had to go to school 2 days after everyone else got out)

I think its stupid. I understand they want you to be in school as much as possible and I agree with that but come on....

10 days per semester here but after 3 days you start getting letters and phone calls
It's only kinky the first time.

I get in trouble every year over this crap. I don't know what the policy is here cause we just moved but I am sure it won't change. My son was a micro premie and gets sick super easy. I refuse to take him to the doctor if hes got a really bad cold or the flu!! He still gets croup every winter, it never fails and then he is out a week. That's about the only time he gets a drs visit cause I need the steroids. Good luck and I wish mine started this week-lol

We were planning a trip to Disney world in Jan because that is the cheapest and slowest time to go. When my kids were in school it was allowed if they did all their work before we left on the trip. We only did it one time. When home schooling this can be counted as a learning experience and in my opinion it is a learning experience. And going in the cheapest time of the yr might be the only time a family can afford to go. And certainly as grandparents you won't find me down there in 100 degree weather. The parents and an aunt were planning to go to. We will jsut have to talk to the new principal. Yes we had a wonderful principal too and we are getting a new one. But thankfully the littlw woman who couldhn't hear who answered the phone has retired too.

My grandson has bad allergies that cause ear infections. They tried last yr not treating with antibiotics. That didn't work. He wasn't in school last yr but if he had been he would have missed a lot of days. I hope he isn't as sick this yr. But he does have to take a med for it and I think that is a problem too , isn't it? Don't the moms have to go to shcool if the kid has to have med? Oh now croup is another thing. It scares me so bad. My daugther had croup and this is her son and he got croup for the first time while here with me. I wanted to holler MaMa. I took him in the bathroom and steamed up the shower. The dr said I could also take him outside. He was having trouble breathing and told me when he was better. Scary stuff!!

10 excused absences a school year. An excused absent it illness, death or educational trip. You have to call in after 2days and send a note in when they go back or they will mark them as unexcused. Too many and they start sending nasty letters.

They allow 13 abscences whether excused or not. I have been battling them all year because my son has so many medical problems, he's always missing school, and I'm sorry, but if he isn't feeling good, I know him well enough to know that he won't do any good in school. He has sleep apnea and sometimes he can't even wake up before like noon or 1 pm. If I wake him up too early, he'll just fall asleep in class and then of course they get mad at him cuz he falls asleep.

When he had his really bad asthma attack, he missed school the friday before it happened cuz he wasn't feeling good and then after he got out of the hospital on Sunday, he missed that following week cuz we couldn't get the asthma under control and even though my son's regular doctor, pediatric pulmonologist, and discharging doctor all wrote notes explaining that he was too ill to go, they freaked out. Of course truancy officer didn't ever actually contact me about any of it, but waited until my son was having an ashtma attack at school to decide that she wanted to talk to me about his abscences and she told me that even if it's excused by a doctor it doesn't matter once it passes that 13th abscence. We're still fighting it out and I refuse to back down. I could understand if he were at home just cuz I was too lazy to wake up and get him to school and I realize that there are parents like that but goodness, we have documentation to prove all the medical issues.

All I can say is good luck and I hope that you don't have any problems this year.

We're allowed 15 absences a semester but no more than 3 in a row without a doctors excuse. If they say they still feel slightly ill on the fourth day I send them anyway. If they get sick at school then the school will know for real that they were sick and I'll come get them. Thankfully, this hasn't happened yet. So far they just wanted another to stay home. But that is just for my oldest one who pushes the 15 day limit. The others only want to stay home when they are actually sick.
