Update: Dad was released from the hospital on Monday morning. THey did all the tests and said that everything looked good. They had him on IV antibiotics while he was there, and came home with antibiotics and another fluid pill. He had a return appt today. His legs look much better, but the swelling in his abdomen never went down. The doctor he saw today ran more tests, and looked at the tests from the hospital. He has said that dad is in end stage cirrhosis and has emphesema. Or rather he told dad he had cirrhosis and emphesema, then sent dad out for more bloodwork and talked to me. He told me that I needed to try and get dad set up for medicaid and disability, because he is in end stage and the bills were getting ready to start adding up more. We are going back again on tuesday, and if the fluid in his abdomen hasn't gone down by then, they are going to do a procedure to drain it. Dad also told the dr that he had quit drinking, which the dr knew was a lie and called him on it. So dad set his quit date for today. But then when i went into the pharmacy to get his meds filled and came back out, he had walked to the convenience store and bought a case of beer. Lovely, NOT!

I think your dad is an alcoholic and even though he may want to quit with all his heart he can't. I don't think there are any true alcoholics out there who choose to be one.
