One of my aunts and one of my uncles have gone through this to lose weight and deal with their diabetes. My uncle did better after the surgery than my aunt did, she lost the weight slower because she insisted on eating wrong. But once she quit trying to eat the way she used to she quit throwing up. My uncle still does the protein drinks, and its been several years. He is also into tofu and other vegetarian foods now. Both of their diabetes is gone and they look fantastic.
Good luck to you!!

My step mom had this done about 5 years ago, she has done good with it. She also did it cause if diabetes. She has had no problems with it since.
My little brother, he is 19. Got the lap band done in November and is doing great. It took a little while to get the band just right for him but since the dr got it right he is doing great. Lost over 50 lbs since.
Good Luck!

I just want to make one correction. Diabetes has NO cure. I had a friend's Mom that had this surgery and her Dr. claimed she was "cured" of diabetes. Well about 6 months after she was "cured" (about 6 months after surgery) she ended up in a diabetic coma and never came out of the coma - she died almost 1 year to the day of her surgery. You should still have a A1C test done at least 3 times per year and check your sugar at least one time per day. If there was a "cure" for diabetes I am sure that the American Diabetes Association would have been promoting it full force.
Also please, please, please check the Dr. that you are using. I mean call and find out all of their medical malpractice history. This surgery is extremely risky.

Actually, they are now claiming that the bariatric surgery is a cure for diabetes... I have seen several shows on it, like Dateline, 20/20, 60 minutes etc... You can check it out Here @ CNN and, Here @ WebMD, many doctors are calling it a complete cure.
But, as you said, it can be a VERY risky surgery.
That said... I personally know of four people who have had it done, each with totally different results.
#1 Female, age 40, had it done in Columbus Oh. She died 3 weeks after surgery due to internal bleeding.
#2 Female, age 35, she did lose 100 pound, which was all she had to lose, she says she lost it from being sick all the time... her skin is really bad now, she has to take shots for proper nutrition... all the stress broke up her 17 year marriage. I asked her, given everything, if she had it to do over again, would she ? She told me "No way"
#3 Female, age 48... she was suffing from everything, diabetes, high blood pressure, too thick of blood etc... she has done very well, she is about 8 months out of surgery, has lost around 60 pounds, and is very happy with the results. (medically).
#4 Male, age 45... he had like 300 pounds to lose, or he was gonna die. He has lost about all of it, he is around three years out of surgery, he does have some medical issues, just due to having been so big to start with.
There are just so many outcomes with this surgery. But, it does sound like you have no choices, as bad as your diabetes is. I would do everything people here suggested... check your doctor's record with this surgery, do all the follow-up they tell you post-op, just be really active in your own health care. Doctor's burn me anyway... there are so many things you can do early on to keep from becoming fully insulin resistant, but, they are not prescribed Rx's from doctors, so, they get no kickbacks, and aren't interested. Simple things can cut your need for insulin by up to 75% ! Cinnamon caps, PGX fiber (it's a proven sugar blocker), and GTF chromium... all the sudden you need HALF the insulin you needed before... in fact, you can't take the PGX fiber if you are already on insulin, because you will require much less insulin, and, your sugar will go too low.
I think, given all I know, that if I had the medical issues that you have, that I would have the surgery. I'm just sorry that you got to the point of not having many other options.
THE BEST TO YOU ! I hope all goes well... if your heart is in it, that'll help for sure !
BEST WISHES !

Good for you! I hope you do GREAT!
I want to have either gastric bypass or a lapband and there is no way in heck I can afford it, even with my insurance paying 80%. I need to lose 200 lbs, give or take, and I have NO HEALTH PROBLEMS other than meanness and a slight touch of arthritis in my right knee, so everyone I talk to medically says I wont qualify.

I wish with all my heart that I could have the lap band surgery. I have emphysema & COPD and my doc's won't hear of it. I have actually thought of going far away and finding someone to do it. My thyroid has been dead for about two years now. I went from a size 2 to a 22 and I am sick of it. I don't think I'd be able to do the bypass, I just want the lap band.

I'm trying to have the surgery. I saw the surgeon last week and he says I am a candidate but I have to go 6 months to a nutritionist before my insurance will approve it. I guess if I lose weight one way or the other it's still a positive but I know I would do better w/ the surgery and diet and not just diet. Well, maybe not, I guess we'll see how it goes!
Good luck to you... they gave me the "10 day liquid diet" sheet when I left last week. I bout had a panic attack reading it... but I know I can do it and you can too!
