I've always thought of it as the ultimate testimony that someone is really telling the truth.
The way I was brought up, saying something like I swear on a stack of Bibles, or on someone's life, or on their grave is the same as really telling the God's honest truth.
I guess when you swear on someone's life, it's like signing their death sentence if you are lying.
If you swear on someone's grave, it's like signing their soul to damnation if you are lying.
Swearing on a stack of Bibles, is knowing someday you will have to face God, and you wouldn't want to tell a lie while swearing it was the truth while you are holding your hand on God's words.
People use to be as good as their word. And I think those terms were used to send the message on home that they really were telling the truth in the past. Nowadays, people aren't as superstitious, and they aren't as likely to stand behind what they say.

You are right Kyla Kym .. but if someone doesn't believe me and wants me to swear on my kids life to "prove" that I am not lying .. they can go "f" themselves .. lmao .. cause I am not doing it.
Like how I brought the other thread into this one
They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, a day to love them, but then an entire life to forget them. Distance and time may separate us but friendship and memories won't.
~When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure~

Oh no, I wouldn't swear on anyones life either. I feel it's just a bad thing to do. I'm the type person that believes in Karma though. So to me this would be just asking for trouble saying something like that.
But I have said I swear on a stack of Bibles before. Such as when something is hard to believe, like when my son took that photo of that ghost. I said I swear on a stack of Bibles that the photo hasn't been altered. To me if I say something like that, it means you can take my word to the bank. Because when I say that, there is no way I would lie.
And yes, I noticed how you brought the other thread in here.

Oh, I believe in karma too .. and I would swear on my own life in a heart beat. My word is gold too and if I say I did or didn't do something, than that is my word. I'll do the bibles, my own life, swear to God .. just not my kids .. that just irks me .. lol. I guess you can say it's a pet peeve of mine.

I always thought that if you swore on something or whatever and you lied that something bad would happen to you. Lol, I told him to swear on his life and he did so if he is dead in a few days or months then I know why. I really only wanted to see if he would do it. He's not a really religous person so it probably wouldn't matter anyway.

Although I am not religious I agree with everything else you said.If I swore on someones grave,I would be telling the truth.Of course there are A lot of dishonest people who would swear on someones grave and be outright lying.

True, there are allot of people like that nowadays for sure. But way back when these oaths first came about, people were more religious & superstitious. A handshake and someone's word, meant something back then. Everyone was so poor that the only thing they did have to be proud of was their morals, values, and honesty. So oaths like that back in the old days would have really been fighting words to call someone a liar after they said that.
