    Need Memphis info, please

    Hi!
I need info/recommendations for things to do (or not) & places to stay in Memphis. I'm taking my Mom there in a few weeks, just the 2 of us. I never got around to signing up for tourism board stuff so I need help. Of course we're going to Graceland, but we'll be there 3 days & I have no other ideas. Sites for coupons would also be a BIG help!
    TIA!

I live here, so if you want to pm me hotels you're looking into, I can tell you if they are in a good part of town. Don't stay at a hotel near Graceland! Not the best part of town. As for things to do: Beale Street (blues clubs, shopping), the zoo (we have pandas and white tigers), plenty of museums, Mud Island, Shelby Farms (worlds largest city park, you can picnic, horseback ride, fish), Wolfchase has a big mall and lots of shopping (any hotel in that area is ok, zip is 38133-38134-38135 or 38016-38018). If you gamble you can go to Tunica (in MS) there are a ton of casinos there (I don't gamble and have never been there, so that is the extent of my knowledge). Hope that helps!

I have family there too. I agree find out if the hotel is in a decent part. The zoo is great! Tunica is great too, in the middle of cotton fields.

I have a question for you guys who live there...
We just got back from there this past weekend, we didn't do anything Tourist-y, but were wondering what is the PINK PALACE?

We were impressed with Memphis, it got scary in a few parts with the transvestite hooker was saw along Lamar. We were stoked to find a REAL VIETNAMESE Restaurant (we have no authentic Vietnamese here in Nashville).

We tried to find a flea market on Sunday, but directions from the locals didn't work out very well. I-55 confussed us. We did see those 3 thrift stores on Summer by Highland, but they were closed Sunday - We were able to hit the AMVETS thrift on Saturday. It was pretty shady, but we scored some great deals... books were a DEAL! We picked up a YearBook from some high shcool there from back in 1973. HILARIOUS PICS! Its like a time capsule! LOL!

I can't wait to check out more of Memphis in the future.

http://www.memphisfleamarket.com/calendar.html This is the schedule for our flea market.

Saturday 10/28/06 Rascal Flatts will be at the FedEx Forum

Something that a lot of people like to do is go see the ducks at the Peabody Hotel. http://www.peabodymemphis.com/peabod...body_ducks.cfm

We just went to the Memphis Zoo this past weekend. The Zoo has added a few new exhibits over the past few years. There are the Panda's of course and The Northwest Territory where they have taken the cold weather animals. The big cats have outdoor exhibits and it is so cool watching them in the trees. There are 3 young tigers that were born back in March; one white tiger, one "normal" tiger and then the third is an unusual color, it is orange with darker orange stripes. They are beautiful and fun to watch.

If you have kids with you there is Boo Zoo going on during that time at the Zoo http://www.memphiszoo.org/events.aspx?pid=69

The Pink Palace is a great place to visit also.

To find more things to do in the area you should also search under Collierville, Germantown, Bartlett and Southaven (this is actually Mississippi) The are "towns" that are make up Memphis and usually have their own events happening...especially with Halloween around the corner.

dv8grl, you must have been at malfunction junction...lol...it has it's reasons for being called that. In Memphis, the Vietnamese resturaunts can be found in Midtown (almost downtown). There is a booming Vietnamese community in our neighborhood. If you come to Mempis again, I would be glad to give you directions. The most popular is probably Saigon Le's on Cleveland. The owner's daughter actually lives right next door to us.

    Re: Need Memphis info, please

We will be going back sometime with-in the next 2 weeks. DH isn't sure what days.
We really didn't get to explore to much of the city, mostly just around the same area. We know Lamar Street very well! LOL!!!

I know my plan is to hit the 4 thrift stores that we know how to get to., and hopefully we'll have time to explore a bit more.

And we need to hook up with your neighboor! We're planning our first trip to Vietnam for next fall & need a guide & translator!

I almost forgot Sun Studios! Now, how could I do that?

And when someone said that Wolfechase Mall was big, that was an understatement, it is BIG!
