Help with this job interview, PLEASE!
OK, I have a job interview tomorrow at 2 pm. It is for a part time (20 hours a week) custodian job that I will work in addition to my current job. I do not know how to dress for this interview. I have always dressed very nicely for interviews, always with tasteful makeup and hair and flat or very low heel shoes and then either a simple dress OR charcoal slacks with a nice shell/sweater, but I am afraid that would be overkill for this. They are expecting me to take an hour out of my work day and come from work then go back to work.
Also, educationally, I am WAY over qualified for this(AS and a BA, for what its worth. Im afraid they wont hire me because they will be afraid I will leave), but right now, I need the money BADLY and REALLY REALLY REALLY need/want this job. I dont plan on looking for anther job until Sophie is in pre-school, which is more than a year away. However, on the plus side, there are 6-8 people at the place where I would be working pulling for me.
I just dont want to screw up.
HELP!!!!

Re: Help with this job interview, PLEASE!
I think the rule of thumb is to dress one step above what you are expected to wear to work.
Also remember Khakis can go and do anything,
Good luck, I pray you get this job.

Re: Help with this job interview, PLEASE!
Well I dont know for sure, But I would think wear something that you'll be wearing to work since you'll be leaving your regular work to work for them. (You dont want to be changing in the car or something )
Good luck and let us know what they say!

Re: Help with this job interview, PLEASE!
The thing is, I dress VERY casually at my current job. I mean sweats and t-shirts. I get nasty and sometimes catch my clothes on the machinery so I dont wear good things at all.
Would nice jeans and a nice top be too casual? That will cause major teasing at my reg job about why Im so "dressed up" but I wouldnt have to change later.

Re: Help with this job interview, PLEASE!
I'd say nice jeans and a nice casual top would probably be good. If you dress too nice they may think you're afraid to get dirty LOL Who knows, Perhaps they'll have a dress code/uniform! Good luck and let us know!

Re: Help with this job interview, PLEASE!
Okay, I've been in this situation too many times. I am the one that wears a business suit for a factory job and blow it. What I have learned is to wear khakis and a nicer top. I've also found out a nice pair of black pants can dress down or dress up an outfit with the proper shirt.
Be honest with them and tell them that you really need this job, and are willing to work hard to get the job. AND if possible, DO NOT GIVE THEM A RESUME!!! This has been my mistake all along. If they see that you are over qualified, they will treat you like you are over qualified.

So, how did the interview go? When do you start?

LOL!
I went against my gut and wore full interview battle dress. There were two ladies interviewing me and they never said a word about my education, but did ask me things like "Do you have experience with hand tools?" and "What experience with cleaning different flooring types do you have?" The director of the daycare where I would be working had written across the top of my application I WANT HER!!!! so MAYBE good things will come. They will be doing the other interviews on Monday and the director will tell me Tuesday morning what she thinks my chances are.
