Why would someone ask such a stupid question

OK, Been seeing this guy off & on for almot 4 years. he's legally seperated, papers filed in the courts and all. (long story, don't ask why he's not divorced yet) He comes over last night and tells me he has an odd question for me. He knows i hate the thought of marriage and swear i'll never do it again. so he asks..

if it meant we could be together forever, and you didn't have to follow through with it, would you agree to marry me?

now aint that the most stupid question in the world??? who wouldn't agree to something they didnt' have to follow through with???

i'm at a total loss. i'm thinking he totally went off the deep end or something

It sounds like he wants some type of commitment from you but he knows you won't marry him. JMO

So I guess what he's saying is... he wants to be engaged but knows going into it that you won't marry him. Its just that it would give him some type of commitment other than just dating.
