Re: Does your child have their own cell phone?
My 17 yr old does. He drives and he also works all over creation. I feel better knowing he has one with him, just in case.
My 12 yr old wants one, but I told him No, he doesnt talk on the house phone and never goes anywhere he is not accompianied by an adult. If he was involved in sports and went off for games or something, I might change my mind.

Re: Does your child have their own cell phone?
I got one for me last year so my boys (17, 13, 10) could call when they were away for various activities (soccer, wrestling, etc). It's a TracFone to be used sparingly and for emergencies. It came in handy when I went to New Orleans on a church trip, etc. My oldest has more or less taken it over, so he is now responsible for paying for the minutes. He is leaving for college soon. I am planning on getting another one for the family to use, and as soon as my now 14 year old can pay for the minutes it will be his. My 10 year old is dying for one but he is not responsible, has no money, and there really is no reason for him to have one.

My 22 year old does, he works and pays for it. My 18 year old does not, but if he starts some kind of school, I will get him one

Re: Does your child have their own cell phone?
No Way! (He's 5) LOL Theres no way he's getting one for quite a few years......I cannot believe they make cell phones for young kids (Isnt it called the firefly or something like that?) You can program certain numbers in but I dont see why a child would need one, They shouldnt be alone at that age anyway.....

Re: Does your child have their own cell phone?
My 18 year old just bought a pre paid phone a couple of weeks ago. She's on her own and pays for it herself. My 12 year old doesn't go anywhere without me but if he did I would get him one of the pre paid phones. My only concern is that he would be using it in his room at night and use up the minutes instead of keeping it for emergencies.

Re: Does your child have their own cell phone?
My kids have cells. Twho of them have fireflys and the other has a regular phone. They are 9, 9, & 11 (we just had birthdays) my youngst has had hers the longest ( a year) and has really been responisble with it... she has to be, she doesn't know anyone to call LOL Her best friend uses the same service, so they call each other all the time since its free. I am sure as they get older, they will have more people to call, but at least they are learning about the responsibility now rather than later when its all new and fun.
They have phones for safety reasons. When they ae with their friends, I can get in touch with them at all times. I don't exactly live in the safest city and I want my kids to be able to get ahold of me 24/7 no matter where they are.
My kids have to pay $10/mo for their phones

Re: Does your child have their own cell phone?
I agree when kids get a little older (Like 8 and up) The cell phone is a good idea because they go to soccer games and baseball and you never know what could happen....Thats a good idea Buttrfli, Teaching them about responsibility at that age (Teach em when they're young )

Re: Does your child have their own cell phone?
just wanted to add... my kids don't keep their phones on them 24/7 ... as long as I am with them or they are home, they don't need them.

Re: Does your child have their own cell phone?
My 19 year old does because she is in college and the city she is in isn't the safest. I feel better knowing she can call for help at anytime. My 12 year old does not. He doesn't even want one. I know where he is at at all times. I am sure in a few years he will want one.

Re: Does your child have their own cell phone?
my 12 year old, (will be 13 tomorrow) has one mostly for when he goes on ballgames and such he can call me when they get back to the school. that way i'm not dragging out the other 2, and end up having to wait forever because they were wrong about the time they were getting back to the school
