Extended Warranties, Would you buy one....
From best buy??? I would like everyone who reads this to give me their opinion. I just got a new computer from Best Buy and they were trying to sell me one. I spoke to sweetie about it, after reading an article in PC World Magazine, and he told me to ask my friends and family here on BBS. Thanks in advance.

Re: Extended Warranties, Would you buy one....
In this day of electronics a warranty is a good idea. I know when I bought my computer it only came with a 30 day warranty. I chose not to purchase one because I only paid $300 for the computer anyway. My daughter purchased the warranty from Best Buy for her digital camera and it was a good thing that she did, it came in handy just a few months later.
In my opinion, if you purchase the warranty straight out, it is a good idea. If the warranty is included in a financed package, no it is not a good idea. If the price of the warranty is included in any amount financed you will be paying for it long after the warranty expires.

Re: Extended Warranties, Would you buy one....
Well I just had to have a regular computer guy come to my house (he ended up taking the computer with him) He had to do a total system overhaul (ended up losing everything on here) But it only cost me $60.00 (some people might charge more)
A warranty will cover things like the monitor failing and would save you from purchasing a new one which is def. worth it! Theres lots to think about but I say buy the warranty because this is a serious purchase, Not like a toaster that costs 20 bucks

Re: Extended Warranties, Would you buy one....
My thoughts is take that money you would of spent on an extended warranty and put it in a savings...........extended warraties are a crap shoot.....they are betting you will never use it and you are betting you might need it. So if the money you would spend on a waranty is in a savings account earning a little bit. If you ever do need it to use it is there and if you dont need it then it is saved for another purchase. Financing an extended warranty you will be paying for it long after the puter is paid for.

Re: Extended Warranties, Would you buy one....
We bought one at Best Buy for our computer, I have had to use it twice already, once for my hard drive and once for my monitor..to me it has been worth it!
Why not learn to enjoy the little things - there are so many of them.

Re: Extended Warranties, Would you buy one....
I think it would depend on how much the warranty cost and how much longer it would extend the warranty that the manufacturer already gives you.
I did buy the extended warranty coverage on my newer Dell. I had a Compaq before and it was a piece of junk. I ended up taking it in for service three times in less than a year and it cost me close to a hundred bucks each time to fix it.
Finally on that last time in, I said screw it...it's not worth all this money I keep sinking in it, so I bought a Dell with a 3 year at home extended warranty. It cost me an extra $100, but I think it is worth it. Even if I only have to use the coverage once, it will pay for itself.
So far, I have not had any problems at all and I still have 2 years left on the coverage. You can bet if I had not bought the coverage, I would have already had problems. That's the way it usually goes.
Anyway, I would say that if the warranty is for two years or longer and it costs $100 or less, you should probably seriously consider it.

Re: Extended Warranties, Would you buy one....
After purchasing over 10 Dells for my home and office - I would say just buy a good Dell (NOT the cheap ones they advertise so low priced) and you should not need the extended warranty. But keep in mind if a part fails I have no problem openning the case, taking the part out and putting in a new one - including hard drives and power supplies. Also a good idea if you buy a extended warranty or not is to back up your important files at least once a week. It doesn't take but a few minutes to burn a cd.
I have heard many horror stories acbout Best Buy's warranty department - and I have a friend that works for them doing in home computer service. So I would say buyer be ware - you really have to look at what you are purchasing and if you can afford to replace the parts if they break. Also check how long the manufacturer warranty is on the system. If it is a year I would not bother with a extended warranty - you would probably be able to replace the system for little more than what the warranty would cost with a system equal to what you currently have.

I would get one on a new computer, yes. Most other things though, I would really think twice about it.

Re: Extended Warranties, Would you buy one....
when i bought our computer from best buy, we paid for the 3 year ext warranty.. best investment we ever made. the computer ran great for about a year, then started having problems. they ended up having to put in a new hard drive and a new dvd player and something else (can't remember) over the course of the last 2 years of the warranty ... the best part of it was they came to my house to fix it and i didn't have to take it in.
a guy would come and check the computer out and then a few days later he'd come back with the stuff to fix it.
we went back and fourth about whether we should get the warranty (they aren't cheap) because DH knows how to work in computers, but with all the stuff they had to replace in it and the time it saved us from having to take it in, it was well worth the money.
*eta* we did not have to pay for any of the replacement parts and all their CS reps spoke english
