Re: What do you guys think?
I’m either very tired or having one of my numerous blonde moments but I really don’t understand what everyone finds so offensive in this – If you substitute “women” for Black I can identify completely. If a female colleague sent it around I wouldn’t consider it a slap at anyone, just an “I know what you’re going through,” empathy type memo, that probably should have been said in private and not an email to prevent misunderstanding.
I completely understand “if you’re too nice they’ll think you’re weak” and “If you’re confident they’ll think you’re conceited” (Only with a female they’ll say you are a stuck-up b****. . . ) At least he left out ‘If you’re promoted it’s your looks or worse – you must be sleeping with someone aaarrrgh. It’s not like he’s saying “Stick it to whitey” In fact he’s telling them good isn’t enough they have to be their best; something women in business understand only too well.
If it really bothers you why not just ask him what he meant by the email and give him a chance to explain his intentions? You might be surprised to find he meant nothing derogatory by it.
You can't get ahold of water by clutching it but let your hand relax & you can experience it..Dyer

Re: What do you guys think?
ANd this is a very racist letter. Who is THEY?!
There is nothing I hate more than "blacks" constantely using the race card when it benefits them, but like the OP said, if she or one of her "white" co-workers had put this out, they would have immediate back-lash and be labeled "racist".
I'm sure "black" people get sick of stereo-types, but this letter is stereo-typing that "THEY" are all the same. Its a total double-standard.

Re: What do you guys think?
While I think the email was in bad taste (particularly considering a manager sent it), I do feel you are getting worked up over nothing.
It may be possible this manager received it in his inbox and just passed the letter on to people that may be interested in that sort of thing.
When I read it, I just thought the reader would take it as a message of pride and holding your head high despite certain misconceptions from people that may not understand them.
If anything, I would be more concerned with this person's hiring practices. If you feel there is inequality, then you should contact his manager and express your concern.
If you feel the letter was a slap in you and your non black co-workers, then why not ask the manager what he meant by the email and why he sent it. Maybe then you could understand where he is coming from, and then he could understand your viewpoint in why you were offended or outraged.
If you don't feel comfortable doing that, then take it up with the manager over his head instead of seething and speculating what would happen "if you sent that exact thing out and put white in place of black you wouldn't have a job"
