    Question I am so scared!!

My daughter is starting her college stuff - like choosing where to go, etc. Well I went to the FASFA website and it just totally scared me with all of the stuff you have to fill out . We have 1 more year to get all of our eggs in one basket . Is anyone out there going through this now and can they give me some advice. Her father is on disability will that be of any help? Are we all going to go broke for her to go to college. She is already taking some of her psychology classes in high school for college credits. Wow this is sooooo overwhelming.

I am sorry it can be frustrating, I just filled out fafsa about two weeks ago. The less you make the more money you will qualify for but I would get it all filled out asap. My state has a cut off date so make sure you check on that! Good Luck! Is she going for a 4 year degree or 2 years? What college is she wanting to go too?

Most 4 year colleges have gotten so expensive that even though you have a low income the student still has to take out loans. The best idea is to try NOT to have to take out loans. A good thing to do is to go to a 2 year accredited college and take the pre-requisites there (such as a community college). These schools tend to be cheaper and you can get away with not taking out loans and in the end save a lot of money. This is what my daughter did in order to keep her loan debt down. Her Pell grant paid for everything and she had a bit left over.

One bit of advice though, be sure that the credits from the 2-yr /community college will transfer to wherever your daughter wants to go. Be sure they are ACCREDITED. I remember when my daughter first began the college search, FASFA and all that. It is a good thing that yours is taking the classes in high school for college credit....saves time earning the degree and in the end MONEY! Good luck and congratulations!!

    Re: I am so scared!!

I know the feeling all too well. It was for me though not my child, yet. Anyway, get the info in as soon as you can. The only thing that FASFA does is see if you qualify, that is it. It is up to the school to notify you if you are approved and how much. The financial aid offices at the schools get really busy so you want your info in there quickly. Be sure to have the codes for the schools that she wants to apply to. If you don't know them call the school and they will tell you. Keep in mind that Grants can only be used for, I think 6 semesters. But depending on her grades, etc she may also qualify for scholarships, work study and loans. The good thing about loans is that she doesn't have to pay them as long as she is in school, that doesn't have to be full time either. Once she is out for 6 months she has to start paying.

It can be overwhelming but try not to stress out too much. Tell you daughter to talk to her school counselor, they ususally have good info on scholarships, etc and will help to fill out the information that is needed.
If you need anything else PM me, I will happy to help.

My son went to school in Berea Kentucky. (you can look up the college website). It was first built as a college for freed slaves, but obviously is for everyone now. If you qualify to get into Berea, it is 100% funded. You ought to apply. If you want more info, you can email me at wilmingtonbahai@gmail.com. Their website is www.berea.com. You can get an application online.

She is wanting to go to a 4 year college ,but I have been trying to talk her into going to a 2 year and then finishing at a bigger college. She already has a indiana scholorship that will pay $3000.00 a year ,but to a indiana school. She wants to get her schooling in Psychology so that will take a ton of schooling.

Make sure and apply early for scholarships. A lot of time the schools themselves will have scholarships specifically for things. Sometimes they go by the grades you got in highschool, sometimes they go by age, sometimes they go by degree choice, sometimes you have to write a paper, etc.

The big thing to remember, just like trying for freebies , if you never try for them you are guaranteed never to get anything. If you try you never know how many you can get.

The other thing to remember is that you can fill it out online as well. I don't think you can the first year, but you have to fill it out every year. The earlier you apply the more money you may get. You can fill it out as soon as you get your W-2's.

    Here is the online FAFSA:

I agree with early, early, early.

    Re: I am so scared!!

Honestly, I was all about the 4 year school, had over $20,000 in scholarships for my first year and I am still in debt from a trimester there. I did the trimester, then realized it was way too much money for school. I transfered to a community college, and was paying less than $2000 a year with scholarships and got my associates, now I'm going to a very good 4 year school, my job pays for my college 100%, and I only have 2 years there and I will have the same degree that others paid hundreds of thousands for. Just keep in mind fafsa is weird, when I hit 18 my parents didn't claim me anymore, I had a job and did it all on my own, but the government will consider you a dependent until you are 24 so the parents income counts as well as the students no matter what. It is overwhelming and sometimes the schools financial aid offices are less than helpful. Early is definitely the key, the earlier you get in the better aid you can get!

My dh went to graduate school, & he got a book from the fin aid dept in his college, & there are literally thousands of dollars out there. Bayer aspirin even gives away a scholarship to people who work in grocery stores that sell their products. You have to really dig dig dig to find the money, but it is there, believe me.
