Re: I am so scared!!
I went to a four year Big Ten School, Michigan State Univ, and had the best time of my life living away from home, learning to be on my own and even get myself up for those 8 am classes. I think going to a large 4-year college is still a good thing for those kids that are ready for it and they may miss out on a part of maturing without it.
But..... I had $13000 in loans (my parents had $10000) and I am paying on them til 2011. That part does bite.
Good luck! Fastweb is a good place to start!

Re: I am so scared!!
Couple of things to look at.
If your daughter is taking college classes while in high school, make sure she is taking the basics and getting those out of the way. There is no point in paying $10K for english, history and math when she can get those at the community college for way less. Also in doing that, when it comes to applying for scholarships, she will get a closer look because most scholarship funds arent given out until students begin their sophomore + years.
Does your daughter do any type of volunteer work in the field she plans to study in? If not, get her to doing that asap. A lot of colleges dont just look at grades anymore. They take into account, work, community service, school activities, etc.
Not sure if you are a minority or not but if you arent, you might look at her attending a HBCU (Historically Black College). They have monies set aside for "minorities" to attend their schools and the education at many of them rank or surpass a lot of state colleges and universities.
Also, I would suggest you have a meeting with her guidance counselor so that she knows your daughter is looking for money for school and what area of study she wants to go into. Many counselors have no idea who wants to attend college and unless its brought to their attention they dont know who to help or how.
Make sure your daughter is willing to write out essays. A lot of scholarships go by the wayside because no one wants to write anymore.
Also if you are looking for money, check the area department stores, Jaycees, Sorority, Fraternities in your area. I know that Target/Mervyns gives out scholarships as well as Khols. If she can, see if she can get a job with one of these companies. There are a number of them that give scholarships to their employees. It may only be $1K but thats $1K less you have to get in loans plus a lot of times you can transfer to the store in the town where you attend college.
If you or her want any more help, feel free to send me a message anytime.
