WOW!!! That is wonderful, congrats! I'm sure if your child is mature enough and supervised MySpace is okay. My 14 almost 15 Dot has been proving herself to be quite irresponsible lately and I do not trust her on MySpace, case in point - putting a profile on the net without asking or receiving permission.

I go a little nuts too - when I hear about children being molested. You have to admit that sites such as MySpace are considered a candy store to pedophiles. You absolutely know for sure they are cruising sites that kids frequent looking for a gullible child or teen. Personal responsibility? Come now, we expect all these kids to be responsible already and know whats out there in the big bad world? Heck, I'm still finding out myself, and I'm almost 50. Do we always know where our kids are on the net? Not unless we are standing over them. My Dot has parental controls on her screen name, but managed to sneak in on my screen name and put up her profile. I'm not saying MySpace should be shut down, but I think an overhaul is in order - perhaps require parental permission with ID check to enable posting.

ITA...its so sad but NO place is safe these days, schools, churches, camps, malls, movie theaters, doctors offices etc. and we can't shut them all down, we have to take every chance we get to teach personal safety and it just comes down to the parents & the child, my DD will be an adult soon and I hope I taught her well....
Why not learn to enjoy the little things - there are so many of them.

I think the parents need an overhaul. Based on your logic,we should shut the churches and organized sports too - both are candy stores for the people. the internet came about in the early 90's and there were probelms for thousands of years before. It is always so easy to blame everyone else for a lack of poor parenting.

Child molesters & pedophiles are 2 different things, a child molester is one who will grab a child from a mall, a park or your front yard etc. a peophile is one who will actively seek a child to groom for sex by close contact and is either a trusted friend, teacher, coach, parents boy/girl friend or the internet or chat room etc. This type seeks a lonely, often neglected child. A child that is left home alone alot or that is not a priority to his/her parents. A child that is looking for attention, love and to feel special. This is where parenting comes in, a well informed, educated child that has a close relationship with his/her parents is less likely to be a target. Of course we can't prevent everything, we can't be at school where some pedophiles have access to our kids but we can ask them about their teachers and if any of them make them feel uncomfotable and we can explore why. Again, its up to us parents to TALK to our kids, the more they know, the safer they are.
Even adults are not safe on the computer, remember the woman who was selling a dog on the net and the buyer (a woman) met to buy the dog and the woman killed her and took the baby out of her stomache, everyone should be careful...but NOT shut down the internet
Why not learn to enjoy the little things - there are so many of them.

Its not evil if you do not let it be..................I am a member there and quite enjoy it! I ran into old friends from high school and have met them again since, and I am cautious of everything and provide limited information about myself for all to see. So, as you see, it does have its advantages! I applaud them for creating it and it can be controlled just as Cats did! For those whom are members, you can find me under manda77, my url.
