Looking for cheaper meds / epilepsy

Hey everyone, I was just diagnosed with epilepsy on October this year (I'm 25) and the medications work great but are really expensive. Normally, I have health coverage, but I was laid off from work last week and I will be losing it in three weeks. I've already refilled my prescriptions, but you can only refill them once in a four week time frame.

The prescription without health care is $362 a month, more than I make on unemployment and working part time at Meijer (local grocery store, I'm a cake decorator).

Any suggestions of where I can go for help with this? Of course I'll hAVE to find a way to pay for them since I want my driver's liscence back (in Michigan, you need to wait six months before driving after a siezure and I've only got three months to go!), but it's going to pushing it. I have very little money and lots of bills, so I would appreciate any help!!

Look up and see if there is an Epilepsy Foundation in your area. If there is you can get your medications for free and your doctor visits for free. They will send you to a specialist and it won't cost you a thing. By the way what is that you take? My husband is also has epilepsy and has to take a combination of three different meds to control his seizures.

Also depending on which meds you take you can go through your doctor and they can file the paper work with the drug companies and you can get your meds free through them if you income qualify.

    Hope this helps.

I have had seizures since I was 14. I know that you can write to the Abbott company (with an mds. referral, of course) & you can get free meds from them for up to a year. I am sure that the companies that make the other drugs you are using probably have hardship programs. You are very brave to drive, I have not done it in 30 years, every time I get my nerve up, there is some God awful accident that makes the news about someone passing out in some way at the wheel. I have enough trouble worrying about my own life, let alone if I messed someone up in some way.

Thanks for all the information everyone. I'm currently taking Trileptal, 1200mg per day and have also been discussing taking Lemictal. Luckily, I haven't had any problems at all since I had my seizures. I had one in August and two on Halloween. Let's hope I'm safe for now.

I will drive once I can... I feel trapped after having been able to drive for ten years and go when I please. Plus I wouldn't be able to get to work, ect without driving.

    Thanks!!

My mother had epilepsy and the meds were getting outrageous for her. Look for a pharmacist that does compounding and see if they will work with your doctor to do the compounding of the drugs you need. Mom's bill dropped $100 for a single med because of the compounding.

Re: Looking for cheaper meds / epilepsy

I heard about Costco being cheaper. It was $100 cheaper than Walgreens/Meijer, so I may look at that. There's a local place here in grand rapids that only deals in cash/creditcards, no insurance companies, so their prices are a little cheaper yet. Not much, but still good.

Thanks for all the help everyone!

Wow! Your dosage is extremely high. Make sure your doctor does blood work to check your levels every 4 to 6 months.
