Red face I wish my daughter cared, Help!

About her things. My dd is 8 and I love to get her nice things (what my money can afford) but she does not care about anything. Not that I want her to be materialistic or anything, I just want her to appreciate stuff. For example.. she asked to join the American Girl Club, and after a while I finally got it for her, $25 to join. It came with cute membership cards that look like credit cards one with her name that says Daughter and one with my name that says mommy. I got the pouch/card holder from bath and body works to go with them. She took hers to school and came back without it and her attitude was like oh well and she shrugged her shoulders. I was not mad that she lost it, it was just her attitude about it. That is how it is with just about everything, she does not appreciate anything. It is just oh well if I break it oh well if I loose it. Maybe I she just stop getting her things and/or start giving her stuff to a little girl who would appreiciate it.

I know exactly what you mean. I have an 11yo son who does the same thing. But I must be a glutten for punishment because I threaten not to buy him things(make him pay for them) and some things he does pay for..but I am right there buying the things I said I wouldnt buy again.....

I think you answered your own question....Don't buy her things till she takes care of them and its not materialistic, its called being responsible..
Why not learn to enjoy the little things - there are so many of them.

If she wants something nice have buy it herself. And explain to her that if she's not going to appreciate what you buy for her then she''l have to buy it for own self.

my boys , ages 12, 10, & 5, have all learned they are gonna do chores to earn the money they want for some things. I refuse to buy things they aren't gonna take care of, its amazing how much better they take care of it when THEIR money was used to buy it

Re: I wish my daughter cared, Help!

Thought I would pipe up from the other point of view... the 8 year old girl.... I am 26 years old, but was once an 8 year old girl that wanted things. I can remember, very vividly, being in Walmart once and asking and begging my Dad for some toy. ( I have no idea now what it was, lol) My Dad said do you have your money... I said yep! He told me that if I wanted so bad, I could by it with my own money.... and then he asked me, "Do you want to spend YOUR money on this?" I said, "no."

Well I didn't get that toy that day, and my parents still bought me stuff here and there... but from that day forward, I realized what money really meant. And now, I may not be the best saver in world, altho I was when I was a teen. But I think long and hard about what I want to spend my money on. And I know, that before I spend MY money on something, I really have to love it alot. But I also appreciated the stuff that my parents got me more too, and I asked for less stuff in the long run as well.

But I remember that day with my dad... I can still remember the exact spot in Walmart that we were standing. So I guess my point is... you may want to buy your kiddos stuff but more than that you want to raise good decent human beings. Human beings that can appreciate the value in things.
    boys suck. (sometimes )
