Question for those who have quit smoking
I have been smoking for alot of years. There was this thing on TV today about people who smoke and it really got me to thinking. I have a 7 year old DD and a 10 month old DD. I really WANT to quit.
But my question to you is : How did you do it? I cant afford the gum or the patches. What did you do to stay focused on quiting?
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Re: Question for those who have quit smoking
i quit and so did my hubby, i had no problem and used nothing, but i was only a social smoker and just for a few years. hubby fell off the wagon a few times but made it-also with nothing.
my uncle swears by big red gum, he says it has to be big red and i have heard others say the same thing
my uncle used sunflower seeds, lots of people try and give them selves something to do, take up hobbies and crafts, you really need to keep your hands and mouth busy.
watch movies, read magazines about the health aspects....i watched a movie with a hospital ward full of people with tubes in thier throats and cancer and it was terrible..it helps with motivation if you see what you become.
join an exersise program, if you can't aford one go to your ymca if you have one, you can get them to give you a free membership if you are willing to volunteer to pay it off. or just go to the library and rent tapes and do your own stuff at home, getting in shape helps you feel better, helps you rid your body of toxins faster and helps you stay active-bordom equals smoking!
join a support group-on line or in your area..see if your local hospital offers a free one
also take a photo of your self, set a goal of a number of days you go with out smoking-compare your photo...you will see a noticeable difference if enough time has gone by, you look younger!
also setting a goal means getting a reward, not just health, you should buy something special for your self...or let others know so they can...get your kids to help you! they can be very persausive.
GOOD LUCK.....by the way, i have 2 family members who died of lung cancer

What works for one may not work for others. You will have to find what works for you. My husband has tried everything under the sun and still smokes. He did stop once cold turkey for a few months then went back to it.
I stopped 15 years ago but I used something to help me wean off them. It cost 80.00 at the time not sure what it costs now. Can't even think of the name of it. You could set a schedule up for when to smoke and just keep putting the times further and further apart. Whatever you do. Good Luck I wish you the best on stopping.

Re: Question for those who have quit smoking
Good luck sweetie! I hope you can do it. I also smoke and need to quit, so does my DH we both tried at the first of the year when he had his tonsils removed. I lasted longer then he did but we are both back to smoking. I tried the Commit Lozenges....OMG! those were the worst tasting things I have ever had in my mouth! After that I went cold turkey. I think if my hubby would not of started back I wouldn't have either, but I know that is just a cop-out!
BE STRONG! I know you can do it! I think Dr. Phil's web site has links to pages that have things to help you quit, not sure though. I am sending good vibes your way that you can quit if you really want to! Keep us updated!

Re: Question for those who have quit smoking
I was an on again off again smoker for years. I was never addicted to the nicotine. I just did it to do it. I finally stopped entirely, I don;t even know when the last time I smoked was. But it was easy to sta away when I look at the prices of cigarettes these days. The amount some people pay I can keep my truck running for a week. The amount you pay over a year can be an additional payment on your mortgage.

Re: Question for those who have quit smoking
You say you can't afford the patches or gum, but if you consider what you pay out in cigarettes, I think you probably could. Thirty bucks a carton is a lot of money.
When you get the urge, (and this sounds goofy) go brush your teeth. Your mouth will feel great, and your kids will notice the fresh breath instead of the smoky smell. Plus, your dentist will love you.

Re: Question for those who have quit smoking
I quit 11yrs ago. May 1 will be the 11th year anniv. We just bought the house . . . . we were broke and smokes were going up to 2.50 a pack. I always told myself that was when I was gonna quit. There would be no way I'm paying 2.50 for a pack of cancer stix. lol How I quit was cold turkey. no patches, no gums. I put a wide rubber band on my wrist and when I got the urge, I'd snap the rubber band. After a while, one snap wouldn't do it, so I'd hafta just keep snapping like 5-6 times. All my friends still smoked so it was hard, but I did it. So glad I did. The first week or so is the hardest part. Once that's over, you're on your way. Things will start tasting better again, too. GOOD LUCK!!! I swore by my rubber band. Cheapest stop-smoking deterant that helped me.
