Question I need opinions on this science project....

My daughter is in the 4th grade and it's science fair time again......BLAH.

Anyhow, what do you think of this experiment? I figure since she can't do it at school, she can do it here and I will take pics of the process and print them out. Then she can use the pictures and the final product on her science board along with step by step details of the process etc. Just need some opinions. TIA

    Turn milk into a solid!

    Ingredients needed....
    skim milk
    white vinegar
    microwave proof bowl
    strainer

    INSTRUCTIONS.....
I bet you've heard the nursery rhyme "Little Miss Muffet." Remember how she sat on her tuffet eating her curds and whey? But, do you know what curds and whey are?
Here's a fun way to find out:
Check with a grown-up before you begin.
Add 4 teaspoons of white vinegar to 1 1/2 cups of skim milk.
Microwave the mixture for about a minute. If you're not allowed to use the microwave, be sure to ask an adult to help you.
After a minute, the milk and vinegar will be separated into two parts, a liquid and a solid.
Here's what happened to the milk. By adding the vinegar, you have created a chemical reaction that separated the milk into two parts, a solid-the curds-and a liquid-the whey.
Now, when you stir the milk, the curds become a "blob."
When you strain the liquid off, you can make the blob into one big lump.
Let it cool off, and then you can play with it. It feels like rubber. The protein in the curds is what makes it act like rubber.
You can form the blob into shapes. If you leave it out, it will harden.

A hundred years ago, people took milk and used it like this to make plastic.

Sounds cool to me. I should have Kelsey do that lol. Kritter is going to see if a humans mouth really is cleaner than a dogs. Let me tell you, it sucked big time to have to be nice to my micro prof to see if he would let me have some petri dishes with agar lol.

LOL I wanted to find something that would be as easy as possible so she would be able to do it herself. Gotta love that zoom show on PBS

Sounds like a neat easy project. Wish we would have fun projects like that in school back in the mid 40's...

Our boys had to have the display board,
    analysis book,
and be able to explain the experiment
    as well as field questions.

I personally disliked going to the 'extreme'
while doing the projects w/ the boys,
but seeing them at the science fair
and going to regionals was well worth it.
Had them for a total of 10 years.
When we had 2 boys the same year,
    it was really tough.

We all did learn something doing those projects.

Its that time of year again here as well. As a matter of fact I was just working on my son's board a little bit. He's 9 (third grade) , so Im doing the part I dont want him to do as it pertains to some chemicals Id rather he not spill on my carpet...LOL

found an awesome project to do with a certain type of paper that changes colors when exposed to types of acid... really a neat project. pretty interesting to see what household things or food items test positive. set up is tomorrow and the judging is Thursday. This is the first one we've actually enjoyed doing....lol....pretty interesting.....
