Okay For All Of You Who Live Near An Af Base...or...
OR WHO HAVE LIVED AT ONE....
MY HUBBY AND I ARE THINKING OF PUTTING IN FOR A BOP (BASE OF PREFERENCE), BECAUSE WE'VE BASICALLY ONLY BEEN HERE AND ONE OTHER BASE, AND BECAUSE WE NEED A CHANGE. WE'VE BOTH ONLY LIVED WHERE THERE IS SNOW, SO WE THOUGHT MAYBE SOMEWHERE SUNNY OR AT LEAST SUNNIER. PLEASE TELL ME WHAT IS NICE ABOUT YOUR AREA OR A BASE YOU'VE BEEN AT, STATESIDE ONLY, PLEASE. WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO US IS A SAFE PLACE FOR KIDS, NOT A REALLY HUGE CITY, REASONABLE HOUSING EXPENSES, AND OF COURSE, GOOD SCHOOLS. AN ADDED BONUS WOULD BE A REAL BEACH, SINCE I'VE NEVER BEEN TO A SANDY BEACH....WE WOULD PREFER SUN, BUT NOT ALOT OF "CRITTERS" EITHER. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP, Shelly [email protected]

Re: Okay For All Of You Who Live Near An Af Base...or...
Well, Ive never lived on an AF base before but the one here in AL is nice. And its only a few hours from the beach. The area is pretty good, its actually inside of Montgomery, so there will be plenty of shoppin areas and what not. Oh. Its Maxwell Air Force Base, AL. As to living costs, not sure as I dont live in Montgomery, Im a little of an hour away. Help any?? LOL Oh, and it gets HOT here in the summer.

Re: Okay For All Of You Who Live Near An Af Base...or...
Well I have your beach, however there is no water
I am a couple of miles from White Sands National Monument
As far as critters, if ya count roaches that can carry off small children and scorpions as critters guess we got thos to! They are not really that big but they do get to a few inches.
Seriously though, I have lived on Holloman for seven years now, it isnt to bad, it is hot, but the base schools are pretty good, it is a small community, after the first year or so ya get used to it and find out it isnt so bad. You need to go visit yor Family Support Center or MPF and check out the SITES booklet, that way you can see different things for yourself and make a decision on where your family should be.
Whatever you decide good luck! What rank and specialty is your hubby? Mine is a SSgt who is a crew chief currently working the MOC

Re: Okay For All Of You Who Live Near An Af Base...or...
Patrick AFB is about 2 hours north of me, on the East coast of Florida. Can't get any closer to the beach. It is super hot and we have hurricanes, but it is not a bad place to live at all. Schools here are hit or miss, just like anywhere else. If you need some inf oI could probably fins some brochures and stuff like that to send to you. I can probably get a copy of the Orlando Sentinel or find out what newspapers they have in that area and send you one. Just let me know.

I used to live at Peterson AFB in Colorado Springs, CO, when my dad was stationed there. There's also the Air Force Academy base not too far from there. The schools we went to were good. It's beautiful and there's lots to do. Tho, I don't know the cost of living or all that, since I was barely a teenager when we left. It does snow in the winter, but the summers do get hot.. without the humidity, which is nice. Here are a couple links.. one you can send for some info on the base and such.

Eglin AFB in the panhandle of FL is basicaslly on the beach. There are several beach towns to live in, Ft. Walton, Crestview, Destin. Another is MacDill AFB in Tampa, FL but that is a bigger city. Good luck whereever you end up

Our #1 on our BOP list is the base in Dover,Deleware.By the beaches and everything!I would stay away from Robins AFB thats where i am till december when we move to new mexico.I also liked Lackland AFB LOTS of stuff to do around!Sheppard AFB is kinda boring but i found the people there to be VERY nice.

Re: Okay For All Of You Who Live Near An Af Base...or...
Thanks so much for all the info~ Keep it coming! The new listing came out today, and the only 3 bases on it for my hubby are; Cannon, NM, Edwards, CA, and Whiteman, MO. I prefer not to go to those places, so I guess we wait until the next round. I have always wanted to visit the east coast, or maybe go south. Not Texas, though. No offense to anybody who lives there, I just don't do "critters" very well. So, I guess the NM is definitely out, with the roaches and scorpions. What kinds of critters does Florida have? And how hot does it get? Is it a humid hot or a dry hot? I've heard there's a difference, we get the humid hot...feels like you're going to melt.....Again, thanks so much for all your info, and feel free to email me if you want....... [email protected]
Oh, somebody asked, what rank and career field my hubby is in...he's a MSgt, and is in AGE (aerospace ground equipment). He's been in almost 20 years but can stay an extra 6, so if we're gonna move, we better do it soon!

We were at Fort Carson until last October. Cost of living isn't too high. I don't remember exactly how much rent and other bills were because we lived on post for the last 1 1/2 years before we moved. The schools were good. We still have friends there if anyone needs information on the area.

Re: Okay For All Of You Who Live Near An Af Base...or...
I have not heard anything good about Cannon and it is rumored to be closing in a few years with everyone coming to Holloman. I don't blame you for not wanting to move right now, none of those choices really sound like the best! NM is between 95 and 107 right now by the way! They say it is a dry heat but I tell you I sweat by behind off and I hate this swamp cooler stuff! Give me my AC back!!
Good luck in whatever decision you make.
