Kroger Stores Issue Roast Beef Recall
Kroger Stores Issue Roast Beef Recall
Meat Tests Positive For Listeria
CINCINNATI -- The Hamilton County (Oh.) General Health District has announced a voluntary recall of some of the meat offered at area Kroger stores.
The recall of Private Selection roast beef was initiated after a sample taken from a Kroger deli service counter in Atlanta tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, Cincinnati television station WLWT reported Wednesday.
The Private Selection roast beef was distributed to Kroger stores across the United States, including Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky.
Customers who purchased the meat this month, and still have it in their refrigerators, can return it for a full refund. The roast beef should not be consumed. Anyone with questions can call (800) 632-6900.
Private Selection Angus roast beef and Cajun roast beef are not affected by the recall.

Listeria monocytogenes ~ This is a Gram-positive bacterium, motile by means of flagella. Some studies suggest that 1-10% of humans may be intestinal carriers of L. monocytogenes. It has been found in at least 37 mammalian species, both domestic and feral, as well as at least 17 species of birds and possibly some species of fish and shellfish. It can be isolated from soil, silage, and other environmental sources. L. monocytogenes is quite hardy and resists the deleterious effects of freezing, drying, and heat remarkably well for a bacterium that does not form spores. Most L. monocytogenes are pathogenic to some degree.
The 1987 incidence data prospectively collected by CDC suggests that there are at least 1600 cases of listeriosis with 415 deaths per year in the U.S. The vast majority of cases are sporadic, making epidemiological links to food very difficult.
Most healthy persons probably show no symptoms. The "complications" are the usual clinical expressions of the disease.

Glad we haven't bought any for a while because that's one of the things we eat as soon as we get home from the store.
The secret is hidden right before your eyes..
