Radio Station gets grandmothers verbal abuse on tape
DECATUR, Georgia (AP) -- A woman has been sentenced to six years probation for making threats to her 13-year-old granddaughter that were recorded by a radio station.
Venus Taylor, 55, pleaded guilty Monday to child cruelty.
Taylor was arrested November 24, 2002, three days after a disc jockey at WALR-FM picked up a station phone line and heard a voice yelling and a child wailing in the background. The station taped the call and turned it over to Atlanta police, who traced it to Taylor's home in DeKalb County.
On the tape, the woman called the girl names and threatened to beat her. She said she hated her and told her she should have been left in a foster home.
It was not clear how the call was made to the radio station, which did not air the tape.
Prosecutor Rachelle Carnesale said it was the first child welfare case she had handled in nine years in which the defendant was accused only of verbal abuse.
Taylor had been raising the 13-year-old and two other grandchildren. Carnesale said Taylor would probably regain custody of the three. Another relative has been caring for them.
Um, regain custody?? They were just threats this time, if they give her custody back who knows what she'll do next time

I can't imagine that she will get them back being that she was convicted of the crime. Whoever has them now, the "other relative", should fight for these kids.
